From Pastor Jay
So last week I
dropped a bit of a bomb around here, informing people that I had been
asked to consider a call to San Antonio TX. For the record, I am
not on any sort of call list for people who are seeking calls - but
this one came in anyway. Last night I announced that I was declining it
(see? it does pay to come to Lent midweeks...). But it has
brought up some interesting things in my soul, and perhaps in yours as
well.
It also created a good moment to explain my role here as pastor.
My role as the pastor of this congregation is given to me by the
congregation acting as the Body of Christ. Jesus institutes this
ministry and gives the responsibility of selecting pastors to His Body,
specifically University Lutheran in my case.
When the church in San Antonio contacted me about the possibility of
being their pastor, I was required to consider it as if the Holy Spirit
were asking me to consider it - because He WAS asking me to consider it
through His church.
However, I declined it. It's important to recognize that I wasn't
declining the Holy Spirit (I don't think I would be fit to be a pastor
if I did that), I was simply trying to move according to His purposes
on my end. It's tricky and messy - and what else would you expect
from the Holy Spirit?
There were a few things that I felt the Holy Spirit was telling me in
this process however, and I would like to share one them with you.
God has continued His mildly harassing habit of using the lectionary
system (our system of readings for Sundays) to point out what He wants
to tell me. Weeks earlier I had decided that this Wednesday I was
going to preach from the phrase "I have to do..." and what our "to-do"
lists tell us about what God wants to do with us.
Just a few days before that sermon God went and reminded me that there
is a "to-do" list that He has prepared for me in advance. He has given
me specific talents and weaknesses through which He seeks to move this
church forward in His grace. My specific set of talents and
weaknesses will not always be helpful to this church, and someday,
you'll need someone who fits you better. That day will come with
tears for me, but also joy in seeing the lack of my usefulness in the
breadth of your ability and the uniqueness of your context and
circumstances. Yet for now, I think we're still matched and I
think God is using this experience to remind us both of what He seeks
for us to do together.
So this week, especially if you are one of our members, I ask that you
pray for us. Let's not waste the Holy Spirit's time by not taking
time to reflect on this. Consider what it is that we can do
together, and what He may be reminding us of. Jesus has a lot of
forgiveness and grace to offer through University Lutheran - how do we
fit together in His plan to offer those things?
+ If you would like
more information about how we see the Office of Pastoral Ministry
functioning, let me know. I can send you resources.
+ Are you interested in the Office of Pastoral Ministry or some other
kind of church work?
+ Is there something that you feel we can be doing together while I am
here at University Lutheran?
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good
Stuff
A pastor was leaving his
area and was saying farewell to his
congregation at the Church doors for the last time. He shook the hand
of an elderly lady as she walked out. She said "Your successor won't be
as good as you." "Nonsense", said the pastor, in a flattered tone. "No,
really", said the old lady, "I've been here under five different
ministers, and each new one has been worse than the last."
