From
Pastor Jay
What now? That was probably a phrase that was
on the lips of the people at the scene in Acts 10 when massive amounts
of Gentiles were receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, speaking in
tongues and extolling God. It didn't seem to fit with what was
normal, it was a game changer.
The disciples were still thinking ethnically. They were still
thinking that the plan of God's salvation of the world was intimately
and exclusively connected with the people of Israel. What God was
showing to the disciples in Acts 10 was that His plan was rather
connected with people that had faith in Him.
Today I read that it will officially happen this year - a new page will
be turned in our nation's history - this year, as long as predictions
hold true, less that 50% of babies born in the United States will be
non-hispanic caucasian. The generational theorists that I've been
following lately see this as an important event in the life cycle of
our nation's culture. For the first time since our nation's
birth, white kids will not be a majority when compared with
non-whites.
Theorists are predicting that since this is the case, the next
generation of children will be more likely to see themselves as part of
a multi-ethnic and multi-racial whole. This is impactful because
over approximately the last 600 years, the nation state has been the
political reality throughout the world. We have divided our
nations roughly on ethnicity and culture. The United States began
bucking that trend by its open door policy to immigration early in its
existence, and today, we see the United States one step closer to being
the "melting pot" that it was claimed to be much earlier on.
So what does this have to do with theology? the Church? Jesus? It means
that Church in the United States is going to have to grapple with the
reality of Acts 10 - the reality that God sends His Holy Spirit even
into situations that make us uncomfortable because of racial issues
that seek to divide us. As we look into this new generation, we
have to say confidently as we look to the children born this year, no
matter race or ethnicity, the same thing that Peter said, "Can anyone
withhold the water for baptizing these people?...."
+ What is your racial and/or ethnic identity? How does race or
ethnicity tell you who you are?
+ What situations make you uncomfortable when it comes to race or
ethnicity?
+ The Holy Spirit brings all people to His Church. What is your
own family or racial or ethnic history with the Church?
