University Lutheran Church and Student Center
From Pastor Jay

There isn't much that freaks me out like the possibility of something going wrong with my body medically.  I just have never felt like I understood what was going on in my body well enough to set my mind at ease.  So instead, my imagination will take something going on with me and often make it bigger than it needs to be.

Of course, on the other hand, to have a medical professional confirm my worst fears is a frightening prospect as well - so I loathe calling the doctor's office, even if they are the only ones that can either tell me that I'm ok, or make me ok.

I think we deal with sin in much the same way.  We can become freaked out about sin to a level that is unhealthy, a level that takes Christ out of the picture and we're left just beating ourselves up.  We know that the solution is to bring that sin to Jesus, the doctor and healer of our sinful lives, but we're retiscent to do that - because, after all, to do that would be to have it confirmed that we're sinners, that we don't have it all together, that we're sick.

So we sit with the symptoms of our sins, wondering how bad they are.  Is this something we'll just get over, like a cold?  Or is this something life changing, or even fatal?  Our Doctor, Jesus, comes to give us the bad news - it is life changing, and it is fatal.  But He gives us good news as well.  He gives us the news that when we bring the disease of our sin to Him, He has the cure - a blood transfusion from His Holy Cross.

I called the doctor today, if there's something wrong with me, they'll give me their diagnosis and the cure.  The same thing happens when you call Jesus. Will you call Him today?

+ What "sin symptoms" do you have?
+ The final diagnosis of sin is death.  Are you kidding yourself about the seriousness of a certain sin?
+ Jesus promises to heal our lives by His forgiveness.  What does a healthy life look like?

In Christ,
Pastor Jay Winters

Good Stuff

A man hasn't been feeling well, so he goes to his doctor for a complete checkup. Afterward, the doctor comes out with the results.
"I'm afraid I have some very bad news," the doctor says. "You're dying, and you don't have much time left."
"Oh, that's terrible!" says the man. "Give it to me straight, Doc. How long have I got?"
"Ten," the doctor says sadly.
"Ten?" the man asks. "Ten what? Months? Weeks? What?!"
"Nine..."
