From Pastor Jay I was reminded recently of a conversation that I had with a friend of mine, Landon, who is currently a fourth year seminarian at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He was telling me a story of studying for the entrance exams to the seminary. He was outside at a family member's house with a pool and half-watching their three year old as he played in the pool. As Landon poured over the New Testament, trying to memorize every book's outline and key facts - this little three year old boy got a bucket of water. As Landon tried to remember all of the different missionary journeys of Paul, this little boy traveled over to where Landon was sitting. And as Landon might have been considering Jesus washing His disciple's feet - this little boy poured the bucket of water on Landon's feet, looked up at him, smiled, and went back to the pool. Because Landon knew those stories, that experience by the pool that day was transformed into something that was used by the Holy Spirit to tell Landon (and hopefully you) something about God. Sometimes we begin to think that our reading of Scripture is about how much or how many books of the Bible we read. It is good to set up goals for ourselves that keep us on track and keep us accountable, but the most important thing can get lost if we keep our decision to 'read a chapter of the Bible a day' as the goal. The goal that God has for you in the Scripture is to see His face. The goal that God has for you in the Scripture is for you to see His love. The goal that God has for you is for you to feel the cool water on your feet, see Him pouring it on you, see His face smile upon you, and for you to run with Him back to the pool every day. Good Stuff "To be formed in the likeness of the crucified - this means being a person sentenced by God. In daily existence one carries God's sentence of death, the necessity of dying before God for the sake of sin....to be conformed with the Risen One - that is to be a new person before God. In the midst of death one is in life...Human beings become human because God because human."Dietrich Bonhoeffer, from his book "Ethics" |
