From Pastor Jay
On beautiful days
like this one in Tallahassee, it's sometimes hard to convince myself
that it's Lent. Lent is caricatured as a season when we don't
smile, don't laugh, don't have fun. And then a gorgeous spring
day comes to visit and it makes us all wonder.
I guess it's easier to have Lent in the midwest where the weather
is still miserable.
The word "Lent" however, is derived from the Old English "lencten"
which alluded to the lengthening of days that we have in Lent.
During this season of Spring, we watch the days "lent" or lengthen
longer and longer. We begin to see the sun earlier and see it go
down later. As Lent goes longer, we see more of the sun.
Similarly, in the church's celebration of the lengthening of days, as
the days get longer we see more and more of the Son. We see more
and more of what He was brought to this earth in order to do.
I'll tell you a secret. I actually really like Lent. It's
not because I'm against alleluias or because I like my music dreary -
it's because of the content, it's because of the discipline, and it's
because I know that in this season we gradually get to see more and
more of the Son.
I like how this season ends with Easter, the biggest of our Christian
celebrations. I like how its discipline lengthens my days and
makes me consider Christ more often.
It's good to be in Lent, to see the lengthening of days and to see more
of the Son, even on beautiful days in Florida.
+ How do your Lent
preparations "lengthen" how much you think about Christ?
+ Do you see more of the Son during Lent or some other season of the
church?
+ As these days grow longer and longer, do you feel like you have more
time? What are you doing with that time?
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good
Stuff
Pastor Meyer waited in
line to fill his car with gas just before a long holiday weekend. There
were many cars ahead of him in the service station. Finally, he saw a
member and got out to chat.
The member remarked, "it seems as if everyone waits until the last
minute to get ready for a long trip." The minister smiled, "I know what
you mean. It's the same in my business."
