From Pastor Jay
The Circuit Counselor is coming after me...
For those of you that don't know what a "circuit" is, it is a grouping
of 7 Lutheran churches around here that work together. The chief
honcho of a circuit is the circuit
counselor. Our circuit counselor is Earl Steffens.
Earl and I were both at the Church Workers' Conference this week held
in
Georgia. The idea behind this conference was to get pastors and
professional church workers to think about health (mental, spiritual,
and physical).
The conference was all going very well. I was
feeling guilty about my unhealth (I have been here about 8 months and
haven't gotten to the gym yet), which is what I figured I was supposed
to feel. Guilt is easily mistaken for godliness in Lutheran
circles.
Then it happened. It was the last day that we were at the
conference and the speaker told us, "ok, now go ahead and find an
accountability partner and work out a plan of how you're going to make
this work."
Panic. Fear. "Wait, wait, wait...you mean you actually
expect me to DO something about this?"
Earl and I agreed to be each other's accountability partners.
He's keeping me honest about getting a gym membership and I'm going to
keep him honest about something else. And I think we might
actually do those things that we agreed to.
I'm not sure how long we'll do them. One of us might end up
failing at the end of this. I may opt to run straight home at the
end of the day instead of to the gym some days. I'll feel guilty
on those days, and I probably won't even be able to confuse it with
feeling godly and righteous.
Sometimes our sins are like my missed trips to the gym. After a
while, it just becomes easier to deal with the guilt than the
godliness. We opt for the guilt because it's easier than
godliness. It is easier, but it never feels better.
When Jesus came into this world, He showed us exactly what we were not
- sinless. He showed us that we do have good reasons for feeling
guilty, and that we should confess our sins. He didn't leave us
there though, mired down in a guilt that seems to have no end. He
didn't give us an automatic free pass out of ever doing anything that
would make us feel guilty either. Instead He gave us this
wonderful gift of forgiveness.
In that gift, He forgives us all that we have done wrong. He sets
us as new beings. He takes away the negative consequences of our
sins which lead us away from Him and lead us into feeling guilty
forever and ever. He restores us to full health and hands us a
gym card, daring us with the question, "are you going to keep feeling
guilty?" "Do you want to be healed?" (John 5)
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good
Stuff
Finals week is coming up. You may
want to consider seeking some help before finals week if you are
already exhibiting one or more of the following signs of semester
burn-out.
- When your
parents inquire about your grades, you sing the Cookie Monster song: "C
is for cookie, that's good enough for me..."
- You wake
up to discover your bed is on fire, but go back to sleep because you
just don't care.
- You've
got so much on your mind, you've forgotten how to pee.
- You sleep
more in class than at home.
- You think
about how relaxing it would be if you were in jail right now!
- You have
spent more time figuring out that you only need a 54% on the final to
pass than the time you have actually spent studying.
- You start
showering after class rather than before.
- The
campus drunk tells you that you should study more.
- Your
absence exceeds your attendance.
- Your
study schedule is based on the rationale that Jesus might return before
the test.
