From Pastor Jay
So long, farewell, auf weidersehen, goodbye...
If they haven't left yet, they most likely will soon. Students of
all shapes and sizes from Florida State, Tallahassee Community College,
and Florida A&M, will soon be wandering away from beloved
Tallahassee and back home to meet loving parents, siblings, and
friends.
It's a sad time for a campus pastor. Last Sunday I started
getting some of my first, "well, I'll see ya in the fall..."
goodbyes. Sigh. It has been fun. We have done a
lot. It has been a whirlwind experience. The academic year
is coming to a close, however, and it's a bittersweet feeling for
me.
Next Thursday (5/1) is the Feast of the Ascension, the day that we
remember the story of the first chapter of the book of Acts (it's after
the Gospels). In the story, Jesus leaves His disciples and goes into a
cloud that lifts Him into the heavens.
He's gone. He's out of their view. They know that He's not
dead, as they thought He was just a few weeks ago, but they still feel
a little sad. They feel a little bittersweet. They look up
into the sky just looking for that last trace of His silhouette.
There are some in our community that have lost someone close to them
this year. We have seen Pastor Tom Dohrman and Elton
Knickerbocker pass away from our community of University
Lutheran. We have seen the pain on the faces of our brothers and
sisters who have lost family and friends.
We might be able to see just a little of what it would like to look
into the disciples' eyes on that Ascension day by looking into the eyes
of someone who has lost a loved one who knew Christ. We might see
it in their eyes, that scanning the horizon for just the last glimpse
of a silhouette. We know we will see them again later, but it doesn't
stop us from looking now.
"Men of Galilee," two voices break in, "why do you stand looking into
heaven?" Two men in white robes have appeared beside the
disciples while they have been looking up into the skies, and they have
a message. "This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven,
will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven."
I have always loved this part. It's a real watershed moment in
the Christian story. It is a definitive moment when Jesus' Gospel
becomes truly the Gospel of the disciples. The keys have been
handed over. There is stuff to do.
"You will receive power..." Jesus says, "and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the end of the
earth." But it takes a couple of voices to make it real for the
disciples. It takes a couple of voices to get them out of their
trance, a couple of voices breaking in and saying, "What are you
doing? Why are you looking into the sky? You're not
there. You're here."
If you are looking into the sky....If you are looking at the
horizon...If you are trying to catch a last glimpse, then do it.
If you need to heal after heartache, then take some time to heal.
If you need to learn what the Gospel is, then learn. Be ready,
though, for a couple of voices breaking in.
Don't worry. You'll have an eternity to look into the sky if
that's what you really want to do.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay
