From Pastor Jay
What do you do after worship at University Lutheran? Most of us
have our Sunday afternoon rituals. Some of us go back to sleep,
taking part in the sacred tradition of the Sunday afternoon nap.
Some of us head off to wild destinations with sand and surf. Some
of us catch whatever is on ESPN.
I normally take Sunday afternoon to look through the list of people who
have been here during the morning service, and then I communicate with
anyone who was new. I have a confession, though. I have been
later than usual with this chore for the past few weeks.
I have been later because I've been partaking in something that the
church has been doing since its inception. I've been eating.
If giving up food is a very "Lent" sort of thing to do, eating is a
very "Easter" thing to do. It seems like every time that Jesus
appears after His Resurrection, He's hungry. He eats with the
disciples after they journey to Emmaus and later appears to His
disciples and ask if they have any broiled fish (Luke 24). In
John 21, Jesus is hanging out on the beach cooking fish and bread by a
fire. Even right before the Ascension in Acts 1, Jesus appears to
be eating (Acts 1:4, most translations have a footnote that says "And
while eating with them...").
This recent trend toward eating on Sunday afternoon happened pretty
naturally one day after church. We were all gathered and talking
and somebody said, "Let's get breakfast." So we did. I had
a Jamaican omelette. The next Sunday, the question was more of a
statement, "What are we doing for lunch?" I had a hamburger with
peanut butter on it (Really. It sounds gross but it's surprisingly
good).
My little lunch bunch reminded me of a goal that I set for myself when
I first got to University Lutheran. My goal was to get out and
visit many of you in your homes, and I have visited quite a few of
you. However, I think lunch at a neutral location might be
better. Here's why: I can invite other people. You know
that person that you've been going to church with for 2 years but still
don't know their name? I can invite them, and you, and me, and
the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit along with us. And
nobody has to gripe about slaving over a hot stove.
Jesus was big on eating. In fact, as He instituted His meal - His
Lord's Supper - He told us that He would eat and drink with us again in
the Resurrection. He might even be intrigued by a peanut butter
hamburger.
It's a crazy idea, I know, but maybe if we are really His Body here on
earth...maybe we should have lunch which each other every now and
then. I think He would like that. I think He would bless it.

Christ,
Pastor Jay
