From Pastor Jay
I just finished a project that has been sitting on the patio here at
University Lutheran. I've been using the patio as my "secret lab"
to construct an a-frame sign with a chalk-board space that we can put
out front of University Lutheran. I had decided to build this
sign months ago when I first heard a student say, "Oh...I had no idea
there was an actual church in that building, I never see anyone out
front."
There is a good reason that she never saw anyone and that we never saw
her - this building is architecturally designed to ignore campus.
The side of our building that faces campus is a solid, impenetrable
wall. That could be a really good excuse for not engaging in
conversations with people at Florida State. We simply don't see
them.
This past Sunday I talked about the people that God has given us to
care for and to pray for. Can you just not see the people God has
given you? How could your eyes be opened?
Almost every time I poke around the front of our building, I find at
least one beer bottle or beer can, a bunch of cigarette butts, and a
few fast food wrappers. From this evidence I can deduce that
there is a very scary monster who sits outside of my church everyday
smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, and eating fast food.
That could be a good reason for not engaging in conversations with
people outside of our front doors. All of the evidence seems to
point to the idea that they are really scary. Are you afraid of
the people God has given you? How could your fears be calmed?
I was just out front earlier today and met someone. He was
tattooed pretty heavily, but nice...not very monster-like. He
even helped me pick up some trash and asked when we had services.
It has taken me forever to finish this sign for the front. I have
great excuses for not engaging people by finishing that sign.
"I'm too busy," "I'm not really a carpenter," "This'll be ugly," "I'll
screw it up," "Somebody will steal it the first day I put it outside,"
etc etc. What are your excuses for not engaging the people God
has given you? Do you really think they're good excuses? honestly?
We have been given people by God, and He seems to enjoy pointing those
people out if we're open to what He is trying to show us. He
enjoys pointing them out because they're just like us. He enjoys
pointing them out because He died on a cross for them just like He died
on a cross for us.
He took no excuse. He looked at the people God gave Him, looked
at a cross and a grave, and unflinchingly took it for us. He
looked at you. He's looking at you today. He's even giving
you to someone else so that they can take care of you in some
way. He has taken care of your sin. He has invited you to
heaven. He has freed you up so that you can engage with and care
for the people God has given you.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

The magazine
"Christianity Today" has an anonymous advice columnist who goes by the
name Eutychus. A lay person wrote in rather distraught about their
pastor's Easter sermon:
Dear Eutychus: (the letter begins)
Our preacher said, On Easter, that Jesus just swooned on the cross and
the disciples nursed Him back to health. What do you think?
Sincerely, Bewildered
Dear Bewildered:
Beat your preacher with a
cat-of-nine-tails using 39 heavy strokes, nail him to a cross, hang him
in the sun for 6 hours; run a spear through his heart; embalm him; put
him in an airless tomb for 36 hours and see what happens.
Sincerely, Eutychus

Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your

That God might show us who He has given us
to take care of and share His Gospel with.
Thanksgiving on the occasion of the marriage of Pastor Tom’s daughter,
Alison.
For all who suffer in the country of Myanmar after they were hit with a
powerful cyclone killing thousands, that this may be an inroad for the
Gospel of Christ.
Our own Andrew Rickmers who is leaving for basic training in 2 weeks.
Thanksgiving for Carol, friend of Mary Liz Moody whom we have prayed
for, that her cancer diagnosis is looking better than expected.
Our Council as we continue to try to figure out when to meet and how to
get the business of the church done.
Continued prayers for Dave Heller's mother, Connie, who awaits word on
cancer tests.
Thanksgiving for Dale Mack who has gone through surgery for cancer with
great successes.
All those who live in a homeless
lifestyle, that we may be empowered to
help them.
For families and all those who travel.
Eric, Angie Wagner's brother, who is dealing with cancer.
Thanksgiving on the occasion of graduations for Jen Barnhill and Lisa
Buenrostro.
Thanksgiving on behalf of all law students who have a short reprieve
from their work.
Thanksgiving that Lucy Lueck is back at home and out of the hospital.
Those who mourn, including those who mourn Jonathan O'Connor, brother
of one of our visitors, who was buried last week.
William Ford, friend of Randee Garrett, who has just left for a year in
Iraq.
...and that our prayers may be
joined with
the prayers of all God's
saints here on earth.
