From Pastor Jay
There it is again, the wind.
Around Tallahassee ever since the morning of Pentecost Sunday we've
been experiencing some occasional gusty winds. Today those winds
are coming with a little bit of rain.
The record that we have of that Pentecost Sunday when the Holy Spirit
was poured out on the disciples in a specific way starts off by saying,
"And suddenly, there came a sound from heaven like a mighty rushing
wind..."
Normally you get a couple of "stock images" for Pentecost Sunday.
You get the image of a dove and you get the image of fire. But as
I look outside of my window, I wonder if the image of wind couldn't
tell us about the Holy Spirit too.
I can hear the wind...well...actually, no, I can't hear the wind.
What I hear is the wind rushing around things like tree branches and
walls and through leaves. I can hear the Holy Spirit rushing
around the words of the Bible...wooshing and whistling at me.
I can see the wind...well...actually I can't see the wind either.
That's probably why "wind" is never one of those Pentecost stock
images. But I can see the branches swaying to and fro. I can
watch as they're gently picked up or when a gust blows a rotten limb
off of the tree. I can see the Holy Spirit lifting you, animating
you, making you seem as if you have truly come alive. I can see
Him blowing off the rotten parts of your life.
I can feel the wind. I can feel it against my skin. I can
feel when it brings in cooler temperatures and I can feel when that hot
south wind heats everything up. I can feel the Holy Spirit
too. I can't tell you everything about Him from just a feeling or
an experience, but I can tell you that He's there.
There is something, however, that I can tell you about the Holy Spirit
that I can't tell you about the wind. I don't know where this
wind is coming from. I do know where the Spirit comes from.
He comes from before the world or time or what we call "existence" ever
really existed. I can tell you why He came. He came because
Jesus Christ died for our sins on a cross so that we might be free to
feel the wind of that Spirit whom we have been given.
So while it is still windy outside...get out there. Listen to the
wind whoosh and whistle. Watch the wind make the trees
sway. Feel the wind against your face. Think of the gift of
the wind, and then think of the gift of the Spirit.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

A little boy stops in
front of a church with his bike and he sees the priest come out. The
priest says "Come inside, I want to show you something". The little boy
says to the priest, "But somebody will steal my bike". The priest says
to him "Don't worry, the Holy Spirit will watch it".
So the little boy goes inside and the priest says, "Let me show you how
to do the sign of the cross. In the name of the Father, the Son and the
Holy Spirit, Amen. Now you try it". So the boy says, "In the name of
the Father and the Son, Amen". The priest says, "What happened to the
Holy Spirit?" The boy replied "He's outside, watching my bike".

Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your
prayer life this week)
That the Spirit may reveal to us the gifts
that He has given us and use us as effective witnesses to the Gospel of
Jesus Christ.
Conrad Walsh who is healing from surgery still, that he may heal and
the doctors may be guided by the Spirit to help him.
Thanksgiving that Curry, whom we prayed for, was able to finish his
marathon for March of Dimes and raise even more money than what he
thought he would, and in so doing proving to us that it is never to late
to follow God's calling.
For all who suffer in the country of Myanmar after they were hit with a
powerful cyclone killing thousands, that this may be an inroad for the
Gospel of Christ.
Our own Andrew Rickmers who is leaving for basic training soon.
Safe travel for Deb Buenrostro's sister Donna, her daughter Lisa, and
all those who are traveling this summer.
Eric, Angie Wagner's brother, who is dealing with cancer.
For all incoming freshmen who begin to come in for orientation sessions
this week, that they may find the Spirit of Christ moving them towards
a connection with life and faith.
For Chris Hahn who begins round 3 of chemo treatments.
Faye, friend of Crystal Berner, who is having a hip replacement.
Pastor Randall G. Ehrichs of Panama City who lost his father.
William Ford, friend of Randee Garrett, who has just left for a
year in Iraq.
Sylvia, friend of the Walsh's, who has had a staph infection for a year.
Thanksgiving that our Church Council
met and had a very effective meeting.
...and that our prayers may be
joined with
the prayers of all God's
saints here on earth.
