From Pastor Jay
I'm not having a very good day. Sigh. It felt good to say
that.
I don't really have any great excuse or any reason for you to feel
sorry for me. Things are going pretty well, actually. I
just came back from a conference where I was able to connect with some
amazing people, my mother and brother are coming down this weekend, and
I've been pretty productive - which makes me happy most of the
time. But not today.
This "bad day" feeling will probably go away by the time that some of
you read this newsletter and I'll go back to being my normal chipper
self. I thank God for that because I don't deserve His grace.
This Sunday's Psalm was one of my favorites, Psalm 8, "What are mere
mortals that You should be mindful of them? Human beings that You
should care for them? You made them a little less than the
heavenly beings." It encourages us to cry out to God, "O Lord,
our God, how majestic is Your name in all the earth." But right
now those words are hard to force out of my mouth. I'm not having
a good day, and my heart is aching for Him to heal it.
This coming Monday is Memorial Day. For some people, it is just
another vacation day - a day to go to the beach. For other
people, however, it's going to be a bad day. It'll be a day of
remembering lost ones. It'll be tough. There will be
tears.
Any Christian who ignores the grim realities of living in a sinful
world or dismisses them as inconsequential is either nieve, dishonest,
or completely disconnected from what it means to be a human. We
live in a world that lives in hurt, and we hurt with the world because
Christ hurt with the world.
Right after Paul's conversion on the road to the Damascus, Jesus says
something interesting to his follower Annanias about Paul. He
says "He is a chosen instrument of of mine to carry my name before the
Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel..." (Acts 9:15-16)
Here is one of the most famous Apostles, the guy who wrote almost half
of the New Testament, the chosen instrument - Paul. If anyone
should get special treatment, it's him, right?
He does get special treatment, actually, but it's not the kind that you
would probably expect. Jesus continues, "For I will show him how
much he must suffer for the sake of My Name." It seems that
anyone God uses in any significant way has been deeply wounded.
Martin Luther said that the cross of Christ should never be seperated
from the cross of the Christian. If it were, His Resurrection
would be seperated from us. Brennan Manning says in his book
"Ruthless Trust" that "On the last day, Jesus will look us over not for
medals, diplomas, or honors, but scars." The meaning of that
quote is multiplied when you remember that even after His Resurrection
Jesus bore His scars from the cross - but they didn't seem to hurt
anymore.
I don't know what wound is bothering you today, but I know this: It
won't always hurt. When Jesus raises us, we may bear the mark,
but we won't bear the pain. There will be no more bad days.
There will be only cries of "O Lord, our God, how majestic is Your
Name!"
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Two Groups Assisted By University Lutheran
University Lutheran has assisted two groups by providing them with
needed meeting space. These two groups are varied in what they
do. One group offers yoga (with no eastern spirituality) classes
for families with babies, the other is the campus ministry outreach of
the Chinese Christian Church here in Tallahassee. We welcome them
and their use of our facilities when they would not be in use normally.

Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your
prayer life this week)
May we begin each
day remembering our Baptisms and speaking the Name of our Triune God,
"Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."
That we may all remember with thanksgiving lives of those who have
passed on before us into the peace of Christ and the sacrifice paid by
our service men and women on this Memorial
Day.
For the friends and family of Richard Morris (friend to Adam Brink) and
Darrly (cousin to Julia Landry) who passed away this week, that they
may have peace and comfort knowing the Resurrection of Christ.
Our own Andrew Rickmers who is beginning basic training.
Thanksgiving for the Campus Ministry Confabulation, and all who were
spurred on in ministry because of it.
For Lutheran campus ministry start ups on the campuses of Flordia
Atlantic University and University of Central Florida.
For all incoming freshmen who begin to come in for orientation sessions
this week, that they may find the Spirit of Christ moving them towards
a connection with life and faith.
Conrad Walsh who is healing from
surgery still, that he may heal and the doctors may be guided by the
Spirit to help him.
Sylvia, friend of the Walsh's, who has had a staph infection for a year.
Safe travel for PJ's mother and brother as they travel to Florida.
...and that our prayers may be
joined with
the prayers of all God's
saints here on earth.
