From Pastor Jay
There are three very large boxes in my office.
Those boxes contain a gift for you if you show up to University
Lutheran. It's a quality 34 oz. garnet and gold reusable water
bottle that has our logo and information on it.
I originally bought these water bottles to use as a part of our
outreach to people on campus. We'll be handing out coupons to
people telling people that if they show up to one of our events
(worship, Bible study, choir, etc) they will get a water bottle stuffed
with information about University Lutheran.
It's not exactly bribery...but I guess it's kind of close. I
wouldn't show up to someplace I wasn't interested at all in because of
a free water bottle - but it would be another good reason for me to
actually show up. I would probably have to be invited first.
Before I give the water bottles to the public, however, I want to give
them to you - the community of University Lutheran.
That proposition may be a little scary to you. People actually
may ask, "hey, what does that say on there?" You may actually
have to answer them. (Frightening, I know, but it gets easier the
more you do it, I promise.)
It may start off as a sheepish, "It's where I go to church," and that
may be where you want it to end. It might end there. Wipe
the nervous sweat off your brow and take a deep breath.
But it may not end there. They might start asking more questions
like "Why do you go to church there? What is a Lutheran? What do
you believe?" Your heart might be racing thinking of how people
might actually ask you those questions. How are you going to
respond?
Ok, stop. Take a deep breath. Nobody has asked you any of
those questions yet. It's probably a good idea to come up with
some answers, but you have at least until this Sunday before you pick
up a water bottle.
Finally, don't worry about getting stumped by a question. I'll
give you a trump card response to any tough question someone might ask
you: "Why don't you come with me to church this Sunday...you can ask
the pastor your question and you can get a water bottle just like this
one."
"But even if you should
suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of
them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as
holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you
for a reason for the hope that is within you; yet do it with gentleness
and respect." I Peter 3:14-15
"...Do not be anxious
about how you should defend yourself, or what you should say, for the
Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say."
Luke 12:11-12

Good
Stuff
A church was once putting
together a series of Bible studies for three nights, one every night,
to reach people who didn't have a relationship with Jesus.
Everyone in the congregation was asked to drive one unchurched or
dechurched person to the Bible study per night if they could.
This was an easy task for most people in the congregation except for an
elderly woman who could no longer drive due to her failing eyesight.
Full of courage and imagination, the elderly woman decided to hire a
cab to drive her around each night so that she could visit her friends
and possibly bring someone to the Bible study.
She struck out the first night. Nobody came with her. She
paid the cabby his wages and asked to hire him again the next night.
The second night came and she struck out again. She paid the
cabby his wages and asked to hire him again for the third night.
She didn't mention it, but the cabby's wages for the third night would
leave her almost broke.
The third night came and the cabby said, "Lady, if this stuff means
enough to you to pay me for three nights to go on a wild goose
chase...then we're not going to drive around tonight. You take me to that Bible study."

Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your
prayer life this week)
That we may not be anxious about or fear
tomorrow, but approach each day as a blessing given to us by God in
which we may praise and worship him through our words, deeds, and
thoughts.
For the friends and family of Richard Morris (friend to Adam Brink) and
Darrly (cousin to Julia Landry) who passed away this week, that they
may have peace and comfort knowing the Resurrection of Christ.
Our own Andrew Rickmers who is in the midst of basic training, and for
all his friends and family as they anxiously await to hear from him.
All the victims of accidents this week, including the I-10 accident
this past weekend.
Lisa Buenrostro and Jordan Snyder, that they may have safe travels.
Harrison Garrett and our own Catie Moody who is graduating from
highschool soon.
Jim, friend of the congregation, who is dealing with cancer.
...and that our prayers may be
joined with
the prayers of all God's
saints here on earth.
