From Pastor Jay

It's good to be back in the heat.  I just got back from a conference in Milwaukee called "Campus Mission Institute."  It was cold.  It actually dipped below 60 degrees one night....in JUNE!  Even a St. Louis boy isn't used to that.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to live in a miserable place where you're not even safe from the cold in the middle of summer.  At least, as a Floridian, I can take solace in knowing that I won't have to wear a sweatshirt until many months from now.  The residents of Milwaukee just don't have that peace of knowing winter is over.

In some ways, we look for the peace of knowing winter is over in our lives as well.  We want to know that the suffering is over, the surprises are over, or the work is over.  We want to take solace in knowing that it's going to be warm for at least a few more months.

The Israelites in this past Sunday's Old Testament lesson (Exodus 19) were looking for that kind of peace, and it seems like God offers it at first.  He says, "You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself..."  It sounds like things are over.  We're home.  We're safe now.

But if you've ever even glanced at the book of Exodus, you realize that there's a whole lot of chapters after 19.  It's not over.  In fact, it's just beginning.  The story isn't over, the plot is still twisting.

As Christians sometimes we're tricked by the devil into thinking that just because we're Christians now that everything will be fine and dandy - that we're home and we're safe - that there are no surprises on the horizon.  The devil appreciates our thinking so, because he knows that if we are dense, dumb, and naive enough to believe that there are no surprises ahead, we're also dense enough to fall into his other traps.

Still, it is interesting what the last few lines in that story from Exodus are.  The people promise "all that the Lord has spoken we will do," and then God promises "Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud that the people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe you forever."

God's promise is an enduring one.  He doesn't tell Moses that this belief is something that will last for a few months, or a year, or even 40 years.  No, this promised belief lasts forever.  It lasts throughout our lives and into the resurrection.  This belief is actually more constant than any peace that we had been looking for.  This peace is with us no matter what circumstances surround us.  This hope is with us in the midst of all the changes of our lives.  This promise is that God will speak to you, and you will hear His Word, not for a month or for a year - but forever.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Help Those Who Are Suffering in Myanmar!

The country of Myanmar is notorious for not allowing foreign missionaries or secular aid workers into its borders to help even after this past cyclone which hurt so many people.  Please consider helping them during this time of change.  Click this link to donate through Lutheran Hour Ministries which uses local people to distribute aid unlike LCMS World Mission and other Lutheran charities.  Your gift will go to help those who need it!
