University Lutheran Church and Student Center

From Pastor Jay

Today was the last day of freshman orientation.  For the past two months I have been meeting freshmen and their parents in Oglesby Union here at Florida State.

I've been able to meet so many people and talk to them about our mission here at University Lutheran.  I have been able to share that University Lutheran cares about students because Jesus cares about students.  It has been exciting living out our mission here.

Today I read about the reason that our mission here at University Lutheran is important, not only to us but to the Church at large.  Of the number of people who drop out of church, guess how many are between the ages of 18-22?  20 per cent?  30? Maybe even 40 per cent?  Those would all be good guesses, but they would be dead wrong.  They would be too low.  70 per cent of those who leave the church are between the ages of 18-22.

Churches used to trust in the ridiculous myth that "once they get married and/or they have their first child, they'll come back."  That's a sick joke told by the master of lies.  Only 20% return if they have had no spiritual formation during their college years.

Our mission at University Lutheran is to show the relevance of Jesus Christ in the lives of those who are most at risk of severing a relationship with the church and with Jesus.  It's a big mission.

There is another aspect of our mission here at University Lutheran.  It is our mission to be a place for those who have left the church to re-enter the church and a life of trusting God.

There is some good news. Of that 70% of people who leave the church, some do come back.  Every time people in this age range are touched by someone with an authentic relationship with Jesus, the chances of their not leaving the church grow.  Of those who have already left the church and have come back, 60% have said that it was because of a family member or a friend who invited them back and cared about their questions when it came to faith.

This shows us something that we should have known all along from reading the Gospels:  Jesus' kingdom is spread in relationships.  If you come here on Sundays to University Lutheran, you have the opportunity to work in the kingdom.  You have the opportunity to be Jesus' hands to those who are most in danger of losing a relationship with the Triune God.  If you're many miles away, you can work with us on our mission.  You can be Jesus' feet chasing down someone who has left the church.  (If you need help doing these things, ask me - write me - call me.)

Jesus wanted to have a relationship with us, the people that had turned away from Him.  The possibility of having a relationship with us was enough for Him to give His life for us.  You have the possibility of having a relationship with someone too.  You have that because He gave it to you.  Are you ready for His mission?  Are you ready to work on those numbers and get them to change?

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

We now have new signage in the front and back of our church in addition to the chalk-board sign.  They're working.  I received a call yesterday from someone who saw the signs, and not even 5 minutes ago someone came in to ask me what it meant that I had put "Free Forgiveness: Details Inside" on our chalk-board sign.

Good Stuff

A Lutheran 4th of July Story

When George Washington asked Lutheran pastor John Muhlenberg to raise a regiment of volunteers, Muhlenberg gladly agreed. Before marching off to join Washington’s army, he delivered a powerful sermon from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 that concluded with these words:

"The Bible tells us there is a time for all things and there is a time to preach and a time to pray but the time for me to preach has passed away, and there is a time to fight, and that time has come now. Now is the time to fight! Call for recruits! Sound the drums!"

Then Muhlenberg took off his clerical robe to reveal the uniform of a Virginia Colonel. Grabbing his musket from behind the pulpit, he donned his Colonel’s hat and marched off to war.
