From Pastor Jay
I bet you weren't
expecting to see this in your inbox today. It's about 3 days
late. The reason for that is that I wasn't feeling so well on
Thursday, the day that this newsletter normally comes out. As
much as I wanted to write the newsletter deep down inside, I couldn't
bring myself to do it.
The Epistle reading from this Sunday comes from Romans chapter 7 in
which Paul bemoans not doing the good that he wants to do but rather
doing the evil that he does not want to do. You have to admit,
you probably don't always do the things that you want to - even if
you're not sick.
Whether its reading a little more in your Bible, spending some more
time with that loved one, or just making the right decision about
something that you've been putting off - there is something that you
have neglected to do.
Chances are that on top of that, you have probably done a few things
that you hadn't really wanted to do. Some temptation that you
caved into, maybe an impetuous harsh word or a bad decision that left
you with enduring consequences.
Paul tells us in 7:15-25 that if we're doing these things. If
we're neglecting the good and choosing the evil, then we have a clear
indicator that sin is alive and well with us. That sin is the
stuff that detracts from our life. Because of sin we have
disease, sorrow, and pain.
In some way, that's why I look forward to the Resurrection so
much. I know that at the Resurrection, there will be no disease,
no sorrow, and no pain. Sin will be the only thing that is dead
and it will have been dead for a long time by the time I start to
wonder where it went.
And because sin will be gone, so will all of the detractions in my
life. No more will I fear bad mistakes with lifelong
consequences. No more will I ashamedly hang my head and confess
that I procrastinated until it was too late. No more will I utter
a harsh word and no more will anyone take my words as harsh. No
more will I get sick on a Thursday or any day.
All of that because Jesus came to set things right in my body and
soul. He came to deliver me from all of that mess. He came
to preach that the time of doing what you don't want to do is
over. He has wiped all our old mistakes away and promises to wipe
away any new ones. Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, our
Lord!
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good
Stuff
A small church decided it
would put a series of "We Love..." messages on its changable sign
outside. It worked fairly well for the first couple of weeks when
the signs said things like, "We Love Families," and "We Love Young
Adults".
However, the third week spelled disaster for the small church's sign
campaign when they proudly told the world:
"We Love Hurting People."
