From Pastor Jay
Bill Lueck, our
congregation's president, said something at our Council meeting last
Sunday that made me think. He encouraged the Council to think
about and return with at least one idea for how University Lutheran can
spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who don't know it yet.
I began to dream and envision. I began to get excited. The people
on the Council have gotten excited too....or...rather, maybe "anxious"
is a better word. They have to come up with an idea. Ideas
aren't always easy, especially good ones. But Bill never said
these had to be "good" ideas - just ideas.
The Peer Ministry team knows quite a bit about "ideas" vs. "good
ideas". You should thank them. They routinely serve as your first
line of defense.
They defend you by listening to all of my ideas that I email to them,
facebook them, or just bring up in conversation. And because they
are kind people, they don't normally tell me, "PJ, that's quite
possibly the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard." Instead, they
smile and realize that if they don't bring it up again, I will just
assume that it was another crazy idea that I should write down in my
book of crazy ideas so that I can bring up the same idea later to see
if it is the right time for that idea. Sometimes "crazy" is just
a matter of timing.
Think about all of the "crazy" ideas from the Bible that really weren't
crazy at all - but were a matter of timing. Noah built an ark and
everyone thought he was nuts until probably about the 5th day of
nothing but rain. Imagine how insane Joshua's troops must have
thought he was when he said, "Now, listen...we're gonna march around
the city 7 times..."
Even Jesus' disciples must have routinely thought that their Rabbi had
just about gone bonkers when He said "I'm going to rebuild this temple,
after it has been torn down, in 3 days." (John 2) Jesus did come
with a construction background, but this was no ordinary carpenter's
feat. Even this early in the Gospel of John, some of Jesus'
disciples must have wondering if they were following a lunatic.
Verse 22 of John 2 tells us when they "got it". It wasn't until
after Jesus had raised from the dead, but they got it. The idea
wasn't crazy anymore. In fact, it had gone from "crazy" to most
meaningful thing in their lives - the death and then resurrection of
the Son of God, Jesus. That crazy idea, that God would tear down
His temple - His Son - is now the most meaningful thing in your
life. The timing is right, and the idea is just crazy enough to
mean everything to us.
I'm sure that some of the Council members would appreciate some
help. If you've got a normal and ordinary idea or a crazy and out
of the box idea, please let one of the Council members know or email
it to me, I'll get it to someone.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Formation
Class Available
"Formation" is
University Lutheran's class which seeks to teach and refresh people in
the teachings of Bible and the Lutheran faith. It begins with the
text of Martin Luther's Small Catechism and seeks to "form" a Christian
life through what we are given in Scripture.
If you feel like you
would like to learn more or if you would like a "refresher course",
please email
Pastor Jay for more information.
Thanks to the Dances
Coffee
at times is mistaken for one of the Lutheran sacraments. Although
we
recognize God’s good gifts given to us through it, it still doesn’t
make the cut for a sacrament. Be sure to thank the Dances
however, for
the good gift of a new coffee maker given to us!.

"Here's to the crazy
ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the
square holes... the ones who see things differently... You can quote
them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing
you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the
human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we
see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they
can change the world, are the ones who do."

Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your
prayer life this week)
That we might be
encouraged to dream up crazy ideas out of our love for God, and that we
may have the humility to see that although His crazy ideas are always
good, ours aren't always so.
Thanksgiving
for the birth of Oliver James Brink to parents Adam and Megan Brink
(and now “big brother” Ethan).
All those who find themselves incarcerated, that God's Law might work
on their hearts to bring them to true repentance, but also that the
Gospel of our Lord might sweetly acquit them of all their sins.
Continued prayers for Larry Lee, father of Cheryl Dance who had a hard
beginning of this week.
Thanksgiving for all of the members of our community here at University
Lutheran.
Mike Vonderohe, a friend of PJ, who was involved in an accident which
has left him hospitalized.
...and that our
prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's
saints here on earth.
