From Pastor Jay
A study conducted by
Gallup polls showed that when presented with a report card, more
attention was consistently given to "F" grades than to "A"
grades. When there is a failure on our report card, we are more
likely to pay attention than when there is a designation of "excellent"
on our card.
This behavior shows up other places too. How many of you have
worried all day about having worn the wrong clothes, but on the day
when 3 people complimented your wardrobe you just said, "Oh, this old
thing? It's nothing..."
This particular plague may affect Lutherans a little more than other
people. We are known world-wide as being modest people who abhor
self-congratulation. If the meek inherit the earth, we're going
to own this place someday.
Some of our pious humility comes from what we believe about ourselves
and our place before God. We know that we are nothing compared to
Him. We know that we could never even hope to earn or even
contribute to our own salvation. We know that God's work of
salvation is complete in itself. We would get an "F" in God's
work, an "F" in Righteousness 101.
What many of us forget about, however, is that God has redeemed us so
that we could have the freedom to be stewards of His creation. He
has already given us the earth, and sometimes our pious meekness gets
in the way of our seeing that. He has put us in charge of things
in our experience, and He loves to see it when we do "A" work in those
things.
He has put you in a position of taking care of what He has given
you. He has given you great things: things like how you live in
relationship with other people, things like how you spend money, things
like your time, things like how you lead others, and things like your
love and your hope.
He has even given you things that might seem kind of small today, but
could be really big - like your laughter. How great would it be
to get to heaven and find out that you got an "A" in laughter? or
complimenting people? or scrunching your nose?
The beautiful thing about our life as Christians, as Lutherans, is not
that we got an "F" in Righteousness 101. The beautiful thing
about our lives as Christians, as Lutherans, is that we have been given
an "A" in righteousness because of Christ. Our "F" is taken care
of, it is gone and replaced with an "A".
But there are other classes now. There are other classes that you
can have fun with. Maybe you can get an "A" in
relationships. Maybe you can get an "A" in scrunching your
nose. You'll never know unless you have fun with it. Enjoy
your classes, your "F" is taken care of, it is gone.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good
Stuff
Due to an abnormally high
number of complaints concerning how grades were assigned in classes
last Spring, FSU has published a guide for how grades are assigned
according to college and/or department:
- Psychology:
- Students are asked to blot ink in their exam books,
close them and turn them in. The professor open the books and assigns
the first grade that comes to mid.
- History:
- All students get the same grade they got last year.
- Religious Studies:
- Grade is determined by God. (And you all get an "A"
if you believe in His Son!)
- Law School:
- Students are asked to defend their position of why
they should receive an A, otherwise they receive an F until an appeal
can be made.
- Mathematics:
- Philosophy:
- Computer Science:
- Random number generator determines grade.
- Musicology:
- Each student must figure out his grade by listening
to the instructor play the corresponding note (+ and - would be sharp
and flat respectively).
- Education:
- All students will be given an "F" so that they know
what it feels like.

Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your
prayer life this week)
That God’s
Spirit might guide us into the life spoken of by the Apostle Paul in
Romans 8.
Betty Knickerbocker who went into the hospital this past week, but is
now recovering at home.
The Chan family of Tallahassee Christian Church who recently buried a
beloved child.
Larry Lee, Cheryl Dance's father, who is now resting at home.
Marv Mills, for renewed health, friend of the Kandzers.
Blake Kandzer, dealing with pain from an injury earlier in life.
For the Brinks who are experiencing something new in their life, 2
children instead of one. That God might watch over their children
and that this community might help where we are able.
For the Chinese Christian Church which continues to meet here at ULC
and spreads the Gospel in a language we are unable to.
For Noah Valenstein and Jen Barnhill who are now done taking the Bar
Exam to become full fledged lawyers, that they may be able to sit back
and relax now that this trial is over.
Willard, grandfather of Randee Garrett, who has been hospitalized again.
Dave, a family friend of the Brinks, who is near the end of his life.
...and that our
prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's
saints here on earth.
