From Pastor Jay
We step out on faith understanding
that God has called us to obedience, but that doesn't mean that we step
out in faith into what we want. Sometimes we step out in faith
and our feet land...well...in dog doo-doo.
Her name was Patricia. She called the church and told me that she
needed help with food and laundry for her kids. I told her I
would visit her with some food. As I got to the trailer home park
on the south side of Tallahassee, I saw a neighborhood that was much
poorer than my neighborhood - a neighborhood of temporary dilapidated
housing. I saw an unleashed dog relieve itself on the side of the
road.
It's a longer story, but the short point of it is that Patricia was
trying to con me, and along with me, University Lutheran. As I
heard her so pathetically try to trick me, I was so mad I could spit.
I left a few of the canned goods that I had purchased for the
visit. I debated leaving them, but I figured that she was at
least in more poverty than most. I left the food, told her what I
thought of her con, and walked out of the door to have an argument with
God about who He lets call the church.
"Why did you let that stinking lying excuse for a human being that
tries to feed off of the generosity and stupidity of others - why did
you let HER call the church?" That's what I wanted to say.
Yet even before the words of this angry prayer spilled out like the
smell of an open dumpster, God answered.
"I let YOU call the church, Jay. I let you call Me. In
fact, even before you knew you were hungry, I fed you. Before you
knew the mess you would make of yourself with sins committed and sins
yet-to-be-committed, I forgave you. You have as much right to
call Me as Patricia had a right to call you."
Sometimes God lets you step in it. I felt like I had stepped in
what that dog had left by the side of the road, and the smell was
choking me. But it was my smell that He was making me aware of -
the smell He washed away with His blood and replaced with His fragrance
(II Cor 2).
It won't be the last time I step in it. Next time might be
different, and who knows where He'll lead me next. I'll follow
where He tells my feet to go, knowing that wherever those feet are, He
has washed them clean.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Special Collection
Last Sunday we prayed for the family of a young man named Nick who had
been shot and killed. This Thursday as I was calling people who had
recently moved into the area to invite them to University Lutheran, I
happened to call Nick's fiance's house - I spoke with the fiance's
mother who was helping her pack. They have to move out by August
8th and don't have money for gas or a truck. God doesn't always
work through coincidences, but I can't ignore this one. It doesn't
"stink" like the story above.
I will accept any donations for a special collection to get this family
on their way on Sunday. There will be a special jar on the
University Lutheran table.
TWO Game-day Parking Spots available for
the season!
We have two game day parking spots available for the season.
These spots go for $150 per season. Additionally, there are
single game spots available for $35. Contact Pastor Jay to get a spot.
Love
Your Neighbor
The "Love Your Neighbor" campaign will kick off on Saturday, August 8th.
Here's what we're doing:
- We’re going to be meeting on August 8th (that’s a
Saturday) at 10am.
- Each team (two people at least) will receive 5 bags
of goodies for our new neighbors (they’ve moved here in the past
month).
- Your team will drive to a neighbor’s location, ring
the doorbell, and if no one is home (or doesn’t answer) you’ll leave
the bag on their door. (They will already have received a postcard and
possibly a call from University Lutheran – so the church should sound
familiar to them.)
If you're interested in "Love Your Neighbor", please contact Pastor Jay
( pastor@universitylutheranchu...you know the rest [so I don't get
spammed] ..).
Thank
you, you were noticed
I certainly can't thank everyone for everything that
happens here at University Lutheran, or ever hope to thank them enough,
but I hope I can thank a few of you each week.
- Thank you for to the Elders for another great meeting.
- Thank you to the Hughes' for trimming up our lawn.
- Thank you to the FL-GA district for paying for our
air conditioning unit
- Thank you to Keith Lukat who sponsored our tailgating
event for the USF vs. FSU (September 26) game.
- Thank you to everyone who renewed their game day
parking spots this year

A sporting goods store
hired a very talented young blind man to work in their fishing
department.
One day, a man who was clearly more than a little behind in his
personal hygiene asked the blind man, "Hey, how much is this rod and
reel?"
The blind man said, "Well, just drop it here on the counter and I'll
tell you. I don't have the ability to see it, but my other senses are
much stronger, I can tell which rod it is just by the sound it makes on
the counter." When the smelly guy dropped the rod and reel the
blind man said, "Oh, that's the Zebco 2003, it's a cheaper model - $20
bucks."
"I'll take it," said the man with the lack of a showering habit.
"Alright," said the blind man, "your total comes to $25.50."
"What?!?!" protested the odoriferous man, "I thought you said $20!"
"I did. $20 for the rod and reel, and $5.50 for the stink bait."
