From Pastor Jay Did you know that we have an attic? I found it the other day while I was walking around the church here. I'm still a little apprehensive about going up into it. For many people, our church is like that attic. Some people have walked right past it and haven't even realized that it's there. I took the FSU Van Tour and they blew right by it without saying a word (don't worry, I excitedly told the whole van, "Hey! That's my new church!"). Other people know that University Lutheran is right there by Garnet and Gold, but they're still not sure they want to go in. There are many people who are looking at our church like I'm looking at our attic - curious, but unwilling to go by myself. (I mean, really, there could be monsters up there.) This week's Gospel lesson (Luke 12:13-21) tells us not to store up for just ourselves, but to be rich toward God. Sometimes we get into the habit of "storing up" our church for ourselves instead of sharing it with our neighbors as God would have us do. Think of your neighbors who live next door to you. They probably notice that your car pulls out every week on Sunday morning. Some of your neighbors work with you or go to school with you. They have probably heard you talking about going to church, your "attic" which you seem to be so comfortable with. They might want to see what you have in your attic here at University Lutheran Church. Ask them sometime. Don't just store this treasure up for yourself. It doesn't have to be a big production. You might be surprised. They may just say, "You know, I've been waiting for you to show me your attic. I've been waiting for you to show me Jesus." in Christ, Pastor Jay Clear Your Calendars! - Student Reception "A good time would be..." Part of what it means for me to be your
pastor is that God has notched out a little place in my heart for each
and every one of you. Since that place is there for you, I want
to fill it up with getting to know you a little better. I would like to stop by your home/dorm
room/workplace sometime and start to get to know you. That
requires working with your schedule and mine. Please consider what would be a good time and
a good day for me to stop
by. My day off is Monday, so that's already out unless there is
no other way to meet. If you would rather have lunch (i.e. you're
a student and don't want me to see how messy your apartment can really
be), that is an option as well. You can either send your day and time to me
via email at pastor@universitylutheranchurch.org
or you can wait until this Sunday and put it on one of the sheets that
will be out on the tables in the entrance way. I will schedule a time with you once I
receive your information. Please include your phone number just
in case I don't have it. Pastor Jay Bible Study In order to do that, however, I need your input. Please email me at pastor@universitylutheranchurch.org and tell me which of the following Bible Studies sound best to you for Sunday Mornings: 1. A series on some normally "skipped over" books of the Bible like the Minor Prophets of the Old Testament or all of those short books at the end of the New Testament. 2. A series about Luther's Four "Sola's" - "Sola Scriptura" (Scripture Alone), "Sola Fide" (Faith Alone), "Sola Gratia" (Grace Alone), "Solus Christus" (Christ Alone). 3. Something else that you come up with. This Bible Study will begin August 18th. Pastor Jay Miss a sermon? Wanna get to know Pastor
