From Pastor Jay Fear is a perplexing emotion. It is one that we don't often want to admit. It is one that we try to bottle up inside of us more than we try to bottle up our anger or tears. It is probably the emotion that we often have to admit that we are the least prepared to deal with in a healthy way. Yet when Martin Luther wrote his Small Catechism he began every explanation to each of the Ten Commandments in this way: "We should fear and love God..." Solomon, the wisest ruler that Israel ever had said in Psalm 111 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." At University Lutheran, we have all sorts of fears both personal and corporate. We may fear how the budget is going. We may fear what the crazy new pastor is going to do next. We may fear that we'll be all alone when we move into our new apartment or dorm room. We may fear how we are supposed to feed our children or ourselves. We may fear terrorist plots and we may fear for our health. We may even fear the monsters in the attic. People without a living relationship with Christ often ask the question of Christians, "Why would I want something ELSE to be afraid of?" Jesus answers that question just before our Gospel lesson for this Sunday. He says "Take all of that fear and put it someplace else, put it on my Dad." Jesus knows that we will never be free of fear, because we are tainted by sin which makes us afraid. (Fear was one of the first emotions of sinful man. Check it out, Genesis 3). Little kids know this all too well. When they are afraid, they run to the person who they think is the biggest and scariest creature on earth - a parent. "That stuff may be scary," they say, "but mom/dad is scarier, and they will protect me." So it is with God. He will protect you. He's scarier. Do not be afraid, you are His child! In Christ, Pastor Jay Clear Your Calendars! New and Important
Calendar Items! Show the Love of Christ to those less fortunate than yourself by helping at the HOPE Shelter on Thursday, August 9th. We need 3-4 people from the hours of 5pm to 6pm. Contact Catherine Knickerbocker, or the church office if you do not have Catherine's email or phone number. Not sure what HOPE is? Read the article below. August 19th - Bible Study at University Lutheran (10am-10:45am) A good reason to come to church early...besides having first pick of the snacks. August 25th - Work Day (9am - ?) Amaze everyone with how "handy" you can be, or come by and learn a new trick while working at the church. We need people who know something about electricity and/or carpentry as well as people who are just willing to lend a friendly hand and do a few jobs around here. We need you to come so we can get Thrivent matching funds - so come one, come all! Jesus was a carpenter's son, come experience what His life might have included! August 26th
- Student Reception (After Worship) New Logo and Letterhead - Your Input Requested She has provided some thumbnail mock-ups of what these may look like. We need to decide on ONE. Please review the ideas by going to this link and email the pastor (or call 850 224 6059) and say which you like best. Keep in mind, these are just mock ups. The images used are there to give you a good idea of possible directions - they will not be the "final image". Also, consider the different typefaces and which you like better.
We need snacks! So that you don't have to feel guilty about it anymore, we're offering you the opportunity to bring snacks. Please sign up on the bulletin board this Sunday by the kitchen. Please consider signing up! If you don't want to do it alone, we will pair you with someone. Help us update our directory! Please email the editor with the correct information for the following: Name: Address: Phone Number: Birthdate: Wedding Anniversary: Please do NOT assume that we have all of your correct information! What IS "HOPE" anyway? It's the second one that might hang you up. The HOPE Community is a comprehensive human services center designed to be a “one-stop-shop” to provide a seamless array of services to address the needs of the homeless. It is the centerpiece of the Big Bend Homeless Coalition. University Lutheran helps the HOPE Community as a part of our response to Christ's exhortation to feed the hungry, give shelter to those without, give drink to the thirsty, visit the imprisoned and sick, and clothe the naked. (Matthew 25) We regularly help through serving food at HOPE, usually on Thursdays for only an hour (5pm-6pm). If you have never done this kind of work before, it will enrich your faith life in an unspeakable way. Please consider helping us help Christ as He shows Himself in those at HOPE Community. For more information on HOPE Community go to http://www.tallahasseech.org/ "A good time would be..." As a new pastor, I would like to visit with you to get to know you a little bit better on a one-on-one basis. It is just hard sometimes to have a really meaningful conversation on Sunday morning after church. Please consider what would be a good time and
a good day for me to stop
by. My day off is Monday, so that's already out unless there is
no other way to meet. If you would rather have lunch (i.e. you're
a student and don't want me to see how messy your apartment can really
be), that is an option as well. You can either send your day and time to me
via email at pastor@universitylutheranchurch.org
or you can wait until this Sunday and put it on one of the sheets that
will be out on the tables in the entrance way. I will schedule a time with you once I
receive your information. Please include your phone number just
in case I don't have it. Thanks to you all who have already signed up! Pastor Jay No Street Name Change
