From Pastor Jay

If you have been watching the Olympics or following the news coverage, you've undoubtedly heard about how Michael Phelps is breaking world records and winning gold medals in Beijing.  It is astonishing to watch, and is likely one of the most astonishing Olympics that Michael Phelps has ever competed in.  He's blowing everyone out of the water.

I swam competitively in high school for a club team.  When I arrived at college, however, I was disappointed to hear about the pool's hours.  There was no swim team, no swim club, no swim anything except a lap swim at 12 noon that I usually couldn't make because of classes.  My swim career hit an abrupt end.

It really wasn't until I was at the seminary that I picked up my goggles once again and joined a masters swim team in St. Louis.  I began swimming my first laps and said hello to an old friend I hadn't seen in a long time - the black line at the bottom of the pool.

There is something comforting about that black line at the bottom of the pool for swimmers.  It gently tells us where to go, when to turn, and how deep the pool is getting.  If you're not a swimmer, maybe it's like the baseline on a baseball diamond or the space in between two lines on a running track, or maybe it's the confines of a balance beam.  Whatever it is, it is something that keeps you from bumping into something that you shouldn't.

In John 21, Peter jumps into the water in order to swim to Jesus.  We don't know if Peter broke any world records that day, but He did have an experience like following that black line, even after He got out of the water that day.  As you read John 21, you hear Jesus say, "Follow Me."  Maybe he felt like he was being put on the spot, but Peter shifts the attention over to John and says, "Lord, what about this man?"  Jesus tells Peter that it basically doesn't matter what happens to the other guy.  "You follow Me," Jesus says again.

When you're swimming, if you look at the black line in someone else's lane, you're going to end up drifting to that lane.  You'll probably get caught up in the lane lines, and that can really hurt.  It's better to follow the black line in your lane.  That's what Jesus is telling Peter here - stay in your lane, keep your eyes on your black line.  Keep your eyes on Jesus.  Keep following Him.  Keep your eyes on His cross where He forgave and forgives your sins.  And if you do happen to look into the next lane and don't see anyone there, don't worry, maybe God has created you to be a Michael Phelps.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

We're having guests!

It's that time of year again, the Fall semester is starting.  Please remember to be watching in the next couple of weeks for visitors that seem a little lost.  Sometimes a friendly smile and a "hello, I don't think I have met you yet" makes the difference between them going to church this year or skipping church this year.
