Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

For the start up of a new Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of West Florida in Pensacola.

For all those dealing with pain and depression including Emily and Brandy who are both dealing with the sadness of miscarriages.

For Bret Knickerbocker who prepares to go to Iraq, and for all of our soldiers.

For Debbie Buenrostro as she continues to deal with illness.

For the Webers, friends of the Wagners who are dealing with cancer.

For Ethan Brink who begins schooling this week.

For the family and friends of Gary Clark, father of FSU Student Isaiah Clark, and the family and friends of Henrietta Swilly both of whom are with Christ awaiting the Resurrection of all flesh.

For our construction workers that they may remain safe and live out their vocation well here.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.

From Pastor Jay

Did you leave your earring at church?  Just the other day I took down an earring that had been attached to the wall for something like 3 weeks.  Maybe even longer, I think I remembered it from when I was here in June.

If you did leave it - sorry, I trashed it.

In this week's Old Testament lesson (Jeremiah 23:23-29) God is ticked.  The nation of Israel had done the same thing to His Word that I did to that earring.  They left it alone, and then they put it out of their minds.  They trashed it.

In that Old Testament lesson, God says that His Word is like a fire and a hammer.  That hits home this week at ULC.  As I'm writing this, I'm hearing all sorts of hammers, saws and power tools being used on the building.

What they are doing here is taking off the old siding, which was leaking, and replacing it with new siding that will keep us dry.  Piece by piece the old wood siding is coming down and new Hardie board siding is going up.  The old wood siding is going into the same place that earring went.

God asks Jeremiah a rhetorical question in verse 28.  He says, "What has straw in common with wheat?"  The answer is that both of them had to be separated and the excess chaff had to be burned off.

This week try praying for God to peel off some of your old leaky siding.  Ask God to take off your sin, for the sake of Jesus Christ, and replace it with new things in your life.  He will be more than happy to do it.

Our God is a tear-down and build-up kind of God.  He tore down your sin on the cross and He wants to work in your life to build up a new and better building for Him to live and work in.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Clear Your Calendars!  New and Important Calendar Items!

August 19th - Bible Study at University Lutheran (10am-10:45am)
A good reason to come to church early...besides having first pick of the snacks. Read the article below about what the Bible Study will be about.

August 25th - Work Day (9am - ?)
Amaze everyone with how "handy" you can be, or come by and learn a new trick while working at the church.  We need people who know something about electricity and/or carpentry as well as people who are just willing to lend a friendly hand and do a few jobs around here.  We need you to come so we can get Thrivent matching funds - so come one, come all!  Jesus was a carpenter's son, come experience what His life might have included!

August 26th - Student Reception (After Worship)
A special reception for new and returning students to Tallahassee is to be held at University Lutheran Church and Student Center following worship on August 26. Please plan on bringing a dish for this reception if you can (ULC will cover the meat).

September 3rd - Watch the Clemson Game at ULC!
Need a place to watch the Clemson Game?  Come by University Lutheran at 8pm on September 3rd (Monday).  We'll be watching the game and cheering the Seminoles.

Late Breaking Construction News

I have just received word that our siding re-do will take a little longer and will be a lot more expensive than we originally thought.  Please keep this process in your prayers.  The Florida Georgia District has agreed to pay for the extra renovations.  Please consider writing a thank you note or email - I am sure they would like to know that the work they are sponsoring is appreciated.

What's a "sola"?

This Sunday at 10am something special is happening at University Lutheran.  We're starting our Bible Study on the 4 Solas of the Reformation.

What are the Four Solas?
Martin Luther came up with a few statements about what he thought Christianity really was all about.  They all begin with "sola", the Latin word for "alone."  They are:
Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) - That Scripture is the only source of theology.
Sola Fide (Faith Alone) - That it is only through trusting faith that we know salvation.
Sola Gratia (Grace Alone) - That only through God's grace manifest in Jesus Christ that we are saved.
And Solus Christus (Christ Alone) - That salvation is found only in Jesus Christ.

Join us as we talk about each of these Solas, every Sunday morning at 10am.

New Logo and Letterhead - Your Input Requested

Mary Liz Moody has been kind enough to come up with some ideas for a new logo that would be used in our letterhead and on some new signage.

She has provided some thumbnail mock-ups of what these may look like.  We need to decide on ONE.

Please review the ideas by going to this link and email the pastor (or call 850 224 6059) and say which you like best.

Keep in mind, these are just mock ups.  The images used are there to give you a good idea of possible directions - they will not be the "final image".  Also, consider the different typefaces and which you like better.

Help us update our directory!

We want to make sure that we have the correct phone number and address for you.
Please email the editor with the correct information for the following:
Name, Address, Phone Number, Birth date, and Wedding Anniversary.
Please do NOT assume that we have all of your correct information!

Looking for a roommate?

If you're seeking one, please contact:
Isaac L. (male) - Isaac was studying abroad for a year and is coming back to Tallahassee.  He is the son of a Lutheran pastor in South Florida.

Parking - the good and the bad

Parking is interesting around here.  It always has been.  Here's some good news and bad news about parking:
Bad - Our parking lot is FILLED with construction workers.  If you're coming during the week, there may or may not be room for you here.  Sundays should be ok.
Good - Our construction workers will be leaving on the weekends.  There will still be some stuff around here, but it will be easier to park.
Good - Pastor Jay spoke with one of the board members for the Islamic Student center next door.  You may park there on Sunday mornings if you promise to be gone by 2pm.

Don't forget to sign in

We're currently playing with different ideas as to how we can make it easier for you to let us know that you were here.  Please continue to sign into the Fellowship Record books (the garnet colored ones) found in the pews.
