From Pastor Jay

Evangelism by scent. That's what we were doing yesterday.  We pulled out the barbeque grill and set it up out front of church with a big sign that said, "Free BBQ".  All of West Jefferson Street was filled with the aroma of burgers and brats.

It was interesting to see who came and ate with us yesterday.  From the people that we invited weeks ago, to the people we invited last minute yesterday, to the people that just wandered in because of the smell - we had all sorts of people in here last night.

I have been reading 2 Corinthians devotionally these days.  In writing his second letter to the Corinthians, he uses some interesting language.  He says "
For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing." (2 Cor 2:15)

To my knowledge, this is one of the few instances in the Bible where the sense of smell is used to explain who we are in Christ.  Paul tells us that we are the aroma of Christ.  We are like a scent that wafts down the street and tickles your nose.  We are to be an aroma that floats in the air and engages people like barbeque smoke, freshly cut grass, or today - that distinctive scent of rain.

Whenever you smell one of those aromas, you know something is happening.  If you smell barbeque, you know that someplace near by there is going to be a piece of meat roasting on a grill.  If you smell cut grass, you know that somewhere nearby someone mowed their lawn.  If you smell that first scent of rain, you know the earth is going to get watered.

Those aromas are proof of what has happened and what is happening.  So too are you the aroma of Christ to both those being saved and those perishing.  You are the scent of something that has happened because of a cross 2000 years ago.  You are the scent of a baptism that happened a matter of years or months ago in your own life.  You are the aroma that lets others know what has happened in your life because of Jesus.

Go forth and smell the place up...

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good Stuff

Signs you're at a bad summer BBQ

5. You're pretty sure the marks on your meat came from a tire, not a grill.
4. The guy cooking asks if you want a leg or thigh...or arm.
3. There are 4 officials at the BBQ, one person to do the grilling, two to hold buckets of water, and another ready with phone in hand to call 911.
2. Your host has already used 3 scouring pads, a bottle of Draino, and an orbital sander to try to clean the grill.
1. Everything on the grill has a long, thin tail...
