From Pastor Jay
"A
Jesus Centered Community of Scripture, Faith, and Grace." It has
been about a year since we started using that line around here.
It came about because of one of the first Bible studies that we did
here after I arrived. That Bible study was on the historic "sola"
(a Latin word meaning "alone") statements of the Lutheran
reformers.
When the early reformers were trying to explain to people what they
believed - they would break it down according to certain "sola"
statements - Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone), Sola Fide (Faith Alone),
Sola Gratia (Grace Alone), and Solus Christus (Christ Alone).
Often times when I met someone who didn't come from a Lutheran
background I got the question, "What do you believe at your
church?" This question used to stymie me. Most of you have
seen my bookshelf. In my mind I would think of that bookshelf,
then I would narrow it down to the section on Lutheran theology, then I
would narrow it down further to the older documents from the 16th
century, then I would narrow it down further to the catechisms, then to
the Small Catechism - which was about as basic as I thought I could get
- about 12 pages - and then I'd ask God "How do I fit all of that into
a sentence or two?" By the time I came up with an inspired
answer, it had taken me stammering all over the place saying "uh" a lot
and losing the person.
That is where this statement comes in handy. When someone asks
what your church believes, you can tick it off in your head - "We're a
Jesus-Centered Community of Scripture, Faith, and Grace."
Now what do each of those items mean? Well...come on Sunday
and/or Wednesday, participate in our community here, and you'll find
out.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

Hurricane Food Drive
With each and every storm, the shelters and foodbanks in our area can
easily become overwhelmed. Your Thrivent Chapter is currently
conducting a food drive in support of ECHO (Emergency Care and Help
Organization) here in Tallahassee who will distribute the goods.
If you would like to participate or would like more information about
ECHO, please contact chapter leader Mollie Frawley.
PJ taking

Pastor Jay will be taking vacation from
the evening of September 7th to September 13th. He will leave and
be back in time for both Sunday services.
Student
Welcome Meal on September 7th
Some very wise people mentioned that we
should not have a student welcome meal after church the first weekend
that they are in town.
We will have a student reception meal
after church on September 7th instead.

Speaking of keeping it
simple...
There was once a preacher whose sermons seemed to drone on and on,
sometimes even going over 30 minutes. However, one day, this very
preacher gave a very short 5 minute sermon. As the preacher
stepped away from the pulpit, he explained why the sermon was so short
- "Ladies and gents, I regret to inform you that last night my dog
Prince, who really likes paper, ate my sermon...let us pray."
After the service, a man walked up to the preacher. He identified
himself as a relative of one of the people in that congregation.
He took the preacher to the side and stuffed a business card and a $20
bill into the preacher's pocket. "That's for if that dog of yours
ever has pups, I want to be the first to know. I do believe my
preacher could benefit from having such a pet."

Peer
Minister Corner
The Peer Ministry is our
leadership team
which meets every week to discuss the direction of our
campus oriented events.
We were a little upset that half our
Seminole Sensation Week events were rained out, but now we have ideas
for later in the week.
We continued counseling training at
our weekly meeting and made decisions on the next round of activities,
including attending Rock the
Universe Sept 5th.
Your Peer
Ministers are Adam
