Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

Chris Walsh who is dealing with colitis in the hospital.

Friend of Nicole, a student, whose mother has lung cancer.

Gary and Renete Weber as they continue to deal with leukemia.

Bob Wagner's son who is a pastor as is considering a call to Oregon.

Thanksgiving for Dana's son who had been diagnosed with a hole in his heart which is miraculously no longer there.

Victims of the North Korean flood, that God's Word may be brought to people living in darkness and despair there.

Thanksgiving for this congregation and its leadership found on the Church Council.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.

From Pastor Jay

"It is better to be told, 'Come up here," than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.'" (Proverbs 25:7).

Although wisdom probably advises against it - I will let you know something deep and personal about myself.  I am a Jimmy Buffett fan.  I own something like 32 Jimmy CD's.

Jimmy Buffett has a great song called "Gypsies in the Palace" that is all about two of his friends who he asks to house sit for him while he's out on tour.  I think I would have picked other people.  One of them remains nameless throughout the song, but his buddy is named "Snake."

The song goes on to talk about a grand party that Snake and his buddy throw in Jimmy's absence.  However, soon Jimmy gives his house a call to tell him that he's coming back to town early.  Snake and his nameless buddy have to break up the party and they end up looking like the real losers that they are.

Even though our reading from Proverbs for this upcoming week (Proverbs 25:6-7) tells us that it's better to be humble about our place before people and before God, we don't always take the advice.  It is pretty easy to want to put on airs and assert ourselves into places that we maybe don't belong.

Our place as sinners before God makes us "Gypsies in the Palace."  We don't belong in the house of God because of anything that we do ourselves.  We should be struck down by lightning for even thinking about going into a church.

Yet Jesus wants us to sit by Him in Eternity.  He wants that so badly that He died on a cross and rose again.  From His throne in heaven He says "Come up here," to the place of honor amongst men.  We're no longer gypsies in the palace.  We're princes and princesses of the Lamb.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Clear Your Calendars!  New and Important Calendar Items!

TODAY - August 29th - Dinner and Obadiah
Stop in at 5:30pm for some food and some talk about the shortest book of the Hebrew Scriptures.

August 31st - Grad Student/Young Adult Gathering

6:30, 6:30, 6:30.  My apologies for conflicting notices all over the place about this event.  I think 6:30 works better.  Come by for some snacks, some beverages (BYOB if you're over 21 and into that sort of thing), some talk about the future, and some time with God.

September 3rd - FSU vs. Clemson for Labor Day
September 3rd is Labor Day.  It's also the first FSU away game.  There is nothing planned for that day here at the church since very few people will be around.  During other away games we will hang out and watch the game.

September 7th - Deadline for Registration for LSF Fall Retreat
Clear your calendars for September 21-23rd.  Lutheran Student Fellowship is having a fall retreat for all of the Florida-Georgia Campus Ministries.  $25 in registration fees gets you a tshirt, lodging for 2 nights (in a church), breakfast and lunch on Saturday, breakfast on Sunday and a wonderful time.  Sign up sheets available on the bulletin board at ULC.

Elections are coming!

Ever wanted a council seat?  Think you know someone who would be good at it?  Have someone to nominate?  Please send your nominations to the secretary.  Deadline for nomination will be September 4th (day after Labor Day).

Thank You for Bringing a Dish

Thank you to everyone who brought a dish on this past Sunday for the potluck style Student Reception.  It was a hit.  A special thank you to students without kitchens who willingly brought in their mother's home baked cookies.  (Really, it happened.)  You have truly shown the community and the hospitality that every church should be so blessed with - you have shown Christ's love in your actions.

Grad Student/Young Adult Gathering

Are you a graduate student or a young adult?  Come by University Lutheran on Friday, August 31st at 5:30pm.  We’ll be getting to know one another, taking a short devotional time, and talking about the future of what a Graduate Student/Young Adult ministry could do here at ULC.  Since you’re probably 21, you may choose to BYOB this event.  Non-alcoholic beverages will be available.

Thank You Thrivent

Good Stuff

I believe in Christianity as I believe the Sun has risen:  not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.
