Newsletter Editor

Hello from Pastor Dohrman

As many of you know, and as many more of you will know after receiving this newsletter, I am on medical leave this term recovering from a bout with Lymphoma… that’s Cancer of the Lymph System.  My chemotherapy is going well and I should be back to normal after a few months.  It was good to get out this past weekend and conduct worship just to see if all my professional parts are still working.  They seem to be OK.

My illness has given me a different perspective on the way I normally look at my life these days.  Usually by late September I am up to my limit in scheduled activities, student contacts, worship planning, tailgates and the like.  As things stand now, I am forced to “take it easy”, let all the chemicals do their work and not complicate my recovery by my impatience.  The up side of this is that I have a lot of time to reflect.

Number one is that I really miss you guys and all that goes on at University Lutheran.  If you are receiving this and have not made the trek over to the South side of campus for Sunday worship or Wednesday suppers, I encourage you to do so.  Our Peer Ministers (Crystal, Randee and Danielle) and other members of our faith community are holding things together quite well

I am also aware at how quickly life styles and plans can change, not just because of a collision with cancer, but with any significant altering of routines and relationships.  Many of you, simply by shifting from a home life to life within a major university, are experiencing such a change.  The opportunities for using that change for personal growth are clear, making commitments to an academic program that will shape your future, crafting new relationships that may well be life-long, enriching your spiritual life through personal reflection and corporate worship (as in Church!) and so on.

As I recover my wits and test my driving skills, I make it over to campus on occasion.  It seems every time I make my way down the narrow streets and poorly marked intersections I slow down to pass by a “fender-bender”.  I think about how it has taken such a sudden jolt to get me to see how important my health is and how important it is to treasure each of life’s moments, and how planning for the future need not take such a collision.  You all have the advantage of not having to wait for the sudden meeting or the wake up call, you can get your life in order now.

As you make the choices that set your routines, keep University Lutheran in mind.  While the “mind is a terrible thing to waste”, so is the faith that has been nurtured in you by the power of the Spirit, known through family, friends and your home church.  We’ll have a special place for you.

Dear Friends, Members, Families of University Lutheran

We were very fortunate that Pastor Dohrman was able to come and be in our midst and preach last Sunday.  We are very fortunate to have very capable substitutes, while Pastor Dohrman is away, but it was great to see and hear our own pastor.  Thanks be to God.

Thanks to Kal and Catherine Knickerbocker, the pre-game tailgate events have been a great success.

Thanks to Cheryl Dance and Debbie Buenrostro who have been leading and helping with our Wednesday evening student gatherings.

Thanks to Cheryl Dance and Mary Hafner who have been helping with the Sunday bulletins.

Thanks to all the folks who have worked at the Lutheran Habitat for Humanity these many weekends, including David and Rosemary Ferguson, Kal Knickerbocker, the Hoover Family, Adam Brink, and all the others I do not know about.

Thanks to Catherine Knickerbocker who has led our church family in serving the residents at the Hope Community Center.  Others who have helped include Paula Smith, David Ferguson, Crystal Berner, and Danielle Marone.

Thanks to Paul Hoover for all of his outside work.

Thanks to Rick Frazier for all of the work he has expended in keeping our physical facility in working order.

Thanks to Jim Freeman for keeping our physical facility in working order, and for the excellent job he does in keeping our finances in order and the IRS content.  Thanks also for the new design of or e-newsletter.

Thanks to the church council for their effort, time, and guidance.

Thanks to all who by coming to worship extend their support, spirit, and fellowship in these trying times as our pastor recovers from his illness and weakness.

Thanks and praise for Adam Brink, who so graciously shares his musical talent with us, and Bethany Kiral, who shares her talents with us as well.

Additionally, we need to acknowledge Andrew Hautau, our secretary and the peer ministers, Crystal, Randee, and Danielle for helping in the day-to-day activities at University Lutheran.

Please continue to keep Pastor Dohrman in your prayers.  Also Mary Liz Moody's mother, who is also battling cancer, and Paula Smith's father, who is very frail at this stage in his life.  Pray that he is comfortable and that his keepers make sure that he is well.

If you are in town this Sunday, please join us for worship at 11 a.m.  We are always very happy to see any of you who join us for worship.

God's blessings to all

Elsa McKinney, President  UUU

University Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML)

Debra Buenrostro is in Palm Beach Gardens, FL this weekend attending the Florida-Georgia District LWML Convention.  As Tallahassee Zone LWML President, Debbie will be one of the delegates voting on projects to be funded in the next biennium.  One of the mission grant proposals to be voted on is our University Lutheran Church’s Women in Mission project, seeking funding of our Peer Ministry program for two more years.

University Lutheran Church’s Women in Mission extend an invitation to all congregation women -- students and resident members -- to join our group.  To find out more about what we do, ask Debra Buenrostro, Catherine Knickerbocker, or Mary Hafner.  UUU

Being at University Lutheran Church is just like being at home

… you can lay around and relax, watch a little TV, maybe a movie, grab a snack, find a quiet corner to do some homework, play ping pong with a friend, and just like at home there is ALWAYS something that NEEDS to be done.  You remember. Honey, please take out the trash. – Hey, when are you going to get the yard mowed? – Weren’t you going to help clean out the garage? – Turn off that TV and…

Now that you are at college and have so much free time… we know you only go to classes three or four hours a day… we could sure use some help around the house…. that is around University Lutheran.  You know, pull weeds, rake the yard, move the lawn, vacuum the carpet, wash the dishes, assist with the worship preparations, paint a wall, and the list goes on and on and on… just like at your other home.

So, when you feel that urge to be real helpful, give us a call. You can reach Elsa McKinney via email or at 893-1464, or Jim Freeman via email or at 575-4309. UUU
