From Pastor Jay
Being a baseball
player in the Philippines was sort of an odd thing. When I was growing up
in the Philippines I was a baseball player. Not many people knew
much about the game or how it was played. They knew it was American,
and that lent it some cultural credibility, but most of my Filipino
friends were so boggled by the equipment and grassy space needed for
this game that they had never had the chance to play.
I, on the other hand, had been enrolled in ILLAM - the International
Little League Association of Manila. My parents had enrolled me
so that I would make friends from all sorts of different nationalities
and backgrounds, and so that I would learn "the" American game -
baseball. I practiced once a week on a team that probably looked
like a mini United Nations task force of Americans, Aussies, Asians,
people from the Middle East, India, and many other places.
But I went to school at a local school. I was the only
non-Filipino at the school: the only kid with blonde hair, but more
importantly, the only kid who knew how to play baseball. For the
first couple of years of my baseball career I just played with the
ILLAM people. Then I started inviting people over to my house to play
after school. One day we found a baseball and a couple of
gloves. What started as a game of catch turned into some batting
practice, which after a few weeks turned into 18 or so people in my
yard playing a miniaturized version of the World Series.
Those games taught me something important about human beings and about
Christianity. It taught me that there is really very little
difference between "community" and "evangelism". In order to have
a community of baseball players, I needed to "evangelize" to my
non-baseball playing friends. I had to put them in touch with
what the game was, explain it, point out some of the heroes, and give
them an opportunity play it themselves. When I did that, I could
have a bunch of people in my yard playing with me. When I didn't
do that, I had to throw a ball up in the air myself to see if I could
hit it as it came down...which wasn't nearly as much fun.
Scripturally, I think this is what evangelism was all about in the
early church - the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8) must have told other
people about the faith because he wanted to share his experience of
Jesus, of Baptism, and of Scripture with them.
Some of you have been throwing the ball in the air by yourself for so
long that you've forgotten what it is like to play a game. It's
ok. Jesus is calling you out. He wants you on His team, not
just to win - but to play in this great community He established:
church. He paid your way. You're in the game. You're
at first base. Now play. Have fun!

Christ,
Pastor Jay

An old St. Louis
Cardinals pitcher found himself in the hospital suffering from a
disease with a fatal diagnosis. As he lay in his bed one night,
an angel appeared to him and said, "I have been sent by the Lord
Almighty to comfort you by answering any one question that you might
have."
The old pitcher thought and thought, and finally came up with the one
question he wanted the angel to answer. "Mr. Angel Sir, I want to
know this: is there baseball in heaven?"
The angel's face contorted a little as he said, "Well, the good news is
that yes, there is baseball in heaven.....the bad news is that you're
pitching on Wednesday."
