All those who lost a loved one or was in some other way affected by the attacks of September 11th, 2001.

Missionaries who send the gift of God from their home lands to others who have not yet heard of Christ's Love.

Soldiers who defend and fight and defend, especially Bret Knickerbocker, who goes to Iraq as a Marine this week.

Those who care for the sick.

Peer Ministers Danielle, Crystal and Randee.

All those who lost a loved one including the family and friends of Jay Bleeke and Simon Markus.

Chris Walsh as he continues to recooperate.

Curtis who prepares to go into surgery.

Dixie and Wilbert Buenrostro who are dealing with cancer.

All those in relationships, that God may show them the glory of His design for human love.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.

From Pastor Jay

I still haven’t gotten it.  Ever since I made the decision to go to the seminary I told myself that I would get a certain plaque for my wall when I became a pastor.  It will be a plaque that says: “Jay Allen Winters, Chief Sinner.”

I have wanted this plaque ever since I heard a guy at a secular leadership seminar talk about the Apostle Paul’s ability to communicate.  He lifted up what Paul says in our Epistle reading for this coming Sunday (I Timothy 1:12-17).  This speaker said, “Paul knew how to talk to sinners because he knew sinners.  He was able to say to them, ‘You want to talk about sin? Let’s talk about sin then! I’ve got the plaque on the wall!’.”

I am a sinner.  If we put sins on a scale – I may even be a worse sinner than you.  I may even be “chief sinner.”

But we don’t put sins on a scale.  Instead Jesus puts sins on the cross.  He takes down our plaque that says “chief sinner” and He replaces it with a sign that says “chief saint.”

I still want that plaque, but I want it so that I can say what Paul said here in I Timothy: “But for that reason [because I’m the chief sinner] I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in Him for eternal life.”

So come on over to University Lutheran.  I may not have the plaque yet, but I have a message of love and grace from Jesus Himself.  If you’ve had a sin that has been bothering you, we can talk about it --- and Jesus can erase it.  If you feel like church is for perfect people – come to this one – its pastor is, by his own admission, a “chief sinner,” who knows Jesus can make you a “chief saint.”

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

What do your Wednesdays look like?

Many of you have heard me ask you, "What do your Wendesdays look like?" I have especially asked this of many of you who are or know of possible confirmation students.  This past Sunday at the Council meeting, the Council approved a "go-ahead" for doing Confirmation on Wednesday evenings with the possibility of extending in the future to include "Sunday School" type activities for younger age children.

The program isn't ready yet, but soon at about 6:30pm, we will begin meeting for confirmation.  (If you can't make this time please let me know - we will most likely run a second session at some time).

Logo - We need you to vote!

Thank you so much for voting on the possible new logo for University Lutheran Church.  There are two options:
a.) A stained-glass look Luther's seal
b.) The stained glass from our sanctuary (dove and hand)

The council advocated the use of Luther's seal, but it was far from unanimous.  The council recommends Luther's seal but defers judgement to you, the member of this community.  Please send your vote to Pastor Jay.

This logo will serve as the major logo on our letterhead and signage around the church.

Lutheran Student Fellowship Retreat

On September 21-23, all undergraduate students are invited on the Lutheran Student Fellowship Retreat in Jacksonville FL.  Sign up sheets and more information are available on the bulletin board by the kitchen.

PLEASE tell me if you are planning on going!

Ten Thousand Villages

This past Tuesday I had a circuit conference meeting.  I make no secret of how much I despise these meetings at times.  But there was a light in this one, and an opportunity to help.

Rev. Emory Hingst, former pastor of University Lutheran, is currently involved with a store called Ten Thousand Villages.  It is in Market Square.  It is a "Free Trade" store which provides the artisans and farmers which produce its goods with the actual profits from their goods, instead of the pittance that they normally recieve.  Please consider shopping there.

Missed a sermon?

Did you miss a sermon?  I do my best to post my manuscript text on my blog on Monday or Tuesday. It is available at jWinters.com.

Good Stuff

A child came home from Sunday School and told his mother  that he had learned a new song about a cross-eyed bear named "Gladly."  It took his  mother a while before she realized that  the hymn was really "Gladly The Cross I'd Bear,"
