From Pastor Jay

If you live in Tallahassee, you're probably watching your gas gauge pretty closely these days.  Ever since last Friday, there has been a gas shortage in Tallahassee.

You might think that this gas shortage had something to do with Hurricane Ike or the logistics of getting refined fuel from one part of the country to another.  You would be marginally correct if you thought that.  Only marginally.

Most of what caused the gas shortage had very little to do with trucks or hurricanes. It had to do with the human heart. It had to do with a disease of that heart, an effect of sin: the overwhelming fear of the unknown. Trust has been obliterated by a gas pump that we used to take for granted.  Some of us have searched the internet to find gas while we've been sitting at 3/4ths of a tank.

Throughout the United States, people are worrying about the stock market crashing.  Trust has been obliterated by what corporations told us was valuable, but we now see is ethereal junk that vanishes in the blink of an Excel spreadsheet.  Some of us have dumped our entire financial portfolios and buried our cash in mason jars.

If you spend any time reading about the values of Americans today, you find out that one of the highest sought after values in America is authenticity.  I have a feeling that a renewed desire for the authentic will be on the rise this week.  People want something real, something forthright, something tangible - something they can trust.  Some of us don't care if you're pretty or wealthy or smart or right all the time, we just want to know we can trust you.

We live in a world that knows less and less about what it is to trust. We live in a world that has more fear than faith.  In the midst of that world you, as one given faith, are called to trust and be trust worthy.  How could you show someone that you trust God today?  How radically could you follow Him?  How could you be trust worthy to your neighbor?  How could you show that faith is more than smoke and mirrors?

Christianity has everything to do with trust.  We call it faith, this ruthless trust, this fierce assurance.  It's not based on proof, but it can't be proven false and stand.  It's not entirely emotional, but it cannot come into being without our heart involved.  It is something so simple that babies carry it in their heartbeats, and it is something so complex that theologians have written volumes about it.

This faith is knowing who God is.  This faith is knowing what He has done for us.  This faith is knowing that everything outside of Him is as fickle as gas pumps and stockmarkets.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good Stuff

An rich, adventuresome man was getting ready for a dangerous safari trip to the middle of the Serengeti.  Before he left, he called in his butler in to speak with him and said, "I will be leaving for my safari in one day. In this sealed envelope is the combination to my safe.  If I do not return in two weeks, it is safe to assume that I have been killed by some wild animal during the course of my safari.  At that point, you may open the safe and take whatever you need to live out the rest of your days."

The next day as the rich man is preparing to leave, the butler runs into his study, breathless and says, "Oh thank goodness I caught you before you left.  You gave me the wrong combination...."
