From Pastor Jay One of the words that IS often used for the kind of community that Christians have with one another is “ekklesia.” People in Biblical times didn’t have CNN. They had what we would basically consider to be a town crier. The word “ekklesia” was often used in a secular context to mean “the people who came out to hear the news.” The prophet Amos talks about people who don’t want to come out to hear the news. He rails people who “lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on couches and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall.” (Amos 6:4) God seems to want you to get out of bed, hear the news, and actually do something about it. As a Christian – you have a very special calling when you hear the news. You are called to “come out and hear the news,” but you are also called to share the news. You are called to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to people that need it. In Biblical times when the ekklesia people heard the news, they went back to their home communities and shared it. A whole polis/city could change because of this process. You can change your polis. Change it with action. Change it with votes. Change it with kindness. Most importantly, change it by telling people the Gospel – that Jesus loves them and wants them in His Polis (Revelation 21:2) for all of eternity. In Christ, Pastor Jay Clear Your Calendars! Interested In Contemporary? Send an email to Pastor Jay if you would be interested in this kind of service. We will soon form a discussion group. And just in case you're saying "There goes the neighborhood..." I would urge you to read something I wrote on my blog before I came here. Confirmation Mentors Needed Be a confirmation mentor! A confirmation mentor is a confirmed Lutheran who is willing to come to a 45 minute confirmation class on Wednesday evenings and is willing to dialogue with and pray for one of our confirmation students. Contact Pastor Jay for more information. Help Us Table University Lutheran will be tabling on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 12:30, and we need rare early risers to reserve the table at 8am. Our tabling program involves taking the prayer requests of students at FSU and praying for them. Contact Peer Minister Danielle for more information. Why do we do THAT? For the next several weeks, watch your bulletins for short explanations to what we do in the Lutheran liturgy. Feel free to submit your own questions. Missed a sermon? *I didn't preach this week - so no sermon. Good Stuff Each person is surrounded and covered by God's blessing even more than he is by the air.C.F.W. Walther
