An Up-date and Note from Pastor Dohrman

This medical leave thing is starting to get old! Taking things easy and taking time to “get well” was fine for a while, but I’m ready to be done with all this. Lord, forgive my impatience with my lymphoma. Four chemotherapies down…four to go…and they really do seem to be working. The combination of your prayers and the Moffitt Cancer Center’s chemicals is an unbeatable team. Thank you, Lord, for the progress I am making.

It’s October. But most of you already know that. October is my big time most favorite month. Which most of you may or may not know. The weather finally makes its turn to fall; the days are bright and crisp…and the beach is just stunning. Another memorable part of October is that during this month many of the Nobel prizes are awarded. With each notification and its accompanying publicity article I am just awed and overawed at the way some people have used their God-given intellect and commitment. From Chemistry to Physics to Peace…I slowly read through each newspaper article and am humbled by the limits of my own mind fully appreciating that other minds seem to have no limits…and I offer a muttered praise to Almighty God for silently being behind all this.

Yet, as I make my late afternoon trek to the mailbox, it is Columbus Day that make’s my day. No mail! I grew up in the Northeast when we even had no school thanks to ol’ Chris. I zero in on Columbus because I have dubbed him “The Patron Saint of Contrary Strategy.” Thanks to years of research, good observation, perfect timing and significant groveling for funds, Columbus’ major discovery was that the best way to discover a more efficient trade route to the Far East was to sail west… and to challenge the flat earth theory by risking life and boat. By so doing, the problem solving method of the contrary strategy became the only thing that made sense to him.

“If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Sound familiar? It’s from the Gospel of Mark and appears in a variety of forms throughout the Gospels. Carrying on the theme... the best way to win a war is to stop the fighting and renew all efforts toward peacemaking… the only way to respond to violence is to turn the other cheek… the only way to overcome evil is to do good… the only way to deal with someone who has wronged or hurt you is to forgive them… the only way to be successful is to acknowledge your limitations… the only way to be recognized for your achievements is to learn the lessons of humility. And the list goes on.

Thank you for the reminder, Chris. The words of our Lord have been saying the same thing for generations. And I look forward to a full mailbox tomorrow. It’s the same mailbox that has brought me so many well wishes and warm thoughts from so many of you. Thanks!

This coming weekend Dr. Gerhard Michael, President of the Florida-Georgia District LCMS, will be with us for our worship. Dr. Michael will deliver the sermon and I will be coming out of my chemo-fog to lead the liturgy… not to worry… with Doctor’s permission and encouragement. With each week/month without a full-time pastor, some of you have been gradually moving away. Please come back. This Sunday would be a great time! We have missed you.
