From Pastor Jay

I don't know if you've seen it or not.  On that right hand tool bar with all of the people that are serving on Sunday...waaaaaay down there, there is a link that says, "ULC Enews Archives".  It's kind of interesting.  I usually check it out when I'm putting the Enews together. Here lately I've been able to look back two years to the Enews from about this same time of year.  It's been kind of fun.

This time in 2006, it appears that people were getting ready to help with a Habitat House.  This weekend we're going to Valdosta, GA to work on a Habitat House. This time last year we were doing Grad Student/Young Adult Small Group. We haven't had one of those gatherings in a long time.
This time last year we were beginning to talk about +Vespers+ Reformed Acoustic Contemporary.  Now it's something that we do every week.

As human beings we love the past.  We cherish it.  We take pictures of it, write stories about it, and tell everyone about those good old days when everything was right in the world. We will even look back at some of the awful stuff in our past and try to "bronze the garbage," making it better than what it really was.  It's human nature.

But it's not really divine nature.
Notice He almost never talks about things "going back to Eden" in Scripture, but instead dreams up a whole new paradise for mankind to live in forever with Him.  That's not the behavior of a past-lover. God doesn't seem to be all wrapped up in the past like we are.  In fact, He really doesn't seem to be all that attached to it at all.  It looks like He favors the future.  Instead of a photo album, it seems that God would rather have a picture about how things could and will be.

Maybe it's because He knows the future, that would make some sense.  Maybe it's because He despises the past, we're really to blame for that one - we cluttered the past up with a bunch of ugly sin. Or maybe it is because for God, all things are good.  He's not worried about the future stuff being bad, He's excited about future because it's going to be better.  It has to be, after all, if it was the same - He'd just be mediocre, and calling God mediocre should really be considered blasphemy.

So if you're His child, and you know that He has something in store for you that is going to be better than the past.  If you know that He has something for you that isn't going to be bad or mediocre or even just good - but something that is BETTER, then shouldn't you be dreaming of the future?  What does that future look like?  Where is God taking us?  Dream it, pray it, and allow God's future to make this place better.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Trunk or Treat Seeking Volunteers

The Peer Ministry Team is seeking to run a "Trunk or Treat" event at University Lutheran on Reformation Night (October 31st) from 5pm-7pm.

The idea of "Trunk or Treat" is to make University Lutheran's parking lot into a non-threatening "neighborhood" where children can go trick-or-treating from one car to the next.

In order to make "Trunk or Treat" a success we need:
  • Volunteers who will help promote the event, especially to families with children and schools
  • Volunteers who will help us the night of the event being runners and floating "do-anything" volunteers (should arrive at University Lutheran by 4pm at the latest)
  • Volunteers who will decorate their cars (nothing too scary or gross...these are kids we're talking about) and hand out candy to children who come (should arrive at University Lutheran by 4pm at the latest)
Please contact Peer Minister Adam Douthwaite for more information.

Children's Sermons to begin 10/12

Pastor Jay will begin including a children's sermon beginning on October 12th.

Missed a sermon?

The sermon text, a podcast, and a couple extra blog articles can be found at  jWinters.com

Send a Card

Consider sending a card or celebrating with the following people in some way this week:

  • October 1st - Bob Culp - Birthday
  • October 2nd - Ryan Mwegoha - Birthday
  • October 8th - Adam Brink - Birthday
  • October 10th - Alyssa Deen - Birthday

Good Stuff

In an attempt to help non-Lutheran church goers, a new Lutheran-to-plain-language dictionary is being produced.  Here are some of the entries being considered:
  • Bulletin - Receipt for having attended church that Sunday
  • Kyrie Eleison - The only Greek words we know besides "gyro" and "baklava"
  • Pew - A medieval torture device still found in many Lutheran churches
  • Agnus Dei - Latin term often mispronounced to mean "cow of God" (i.e. "Angus day", "aG-noose" means "lamb")
  • Entrance Hymn - Song sung at the time that latecomers are just straggling through the doors
