From Pastor Jay Yesterday I was sitting beside a lake in Georgia. I couldn’t hear cars or cell phones or televisions or radios. I didn’t have my mp3 player. All I had was quiet. The Old Testament prophet Habakkuk cries to God in Chapter 1, “O Lord, how long shall I cry for help and you will not listen? Or cry to you ‘Violence!’ and you will not save?” Habakkuk’s life is filled with noise. It’s filled with the noise of people of his own nation and religion being wicked. Those wicked people he says, are surrounding the good people – the righteous. The righteous people are getting anxious. And anxious people get noisy. God answers Habakkuk and says, “…Be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” He starts telling Habakkuk what He is going to do. Habakkuk goes to a watchpost. He says, “I will…station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me.” This prophet of God is going up to a place where the noise and din of the city is no longer distracting him. He is listening for God in silence. There is a time for speaking. There is a time for yelling. There are times for the war chant and there are times for music as loud as you can make it. Just remember, there is also a time for silence. A time to look at a picture of Jesus or the cross or the empty tomb. A time to reflect. A time to see and hear God’s creation. Take some time for quiet, silence, hushed, tranquil, serene, motionless, meditative, still faith. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently." Psalm 37 In Christ, Pastor Jay Clear Your Calendars! Interested In Contemporary? Send an email to Pastor Jay if you would be interested in this kind of service. We will soon form a discussion group. We have had a few people show interest but need a few more. Confirmation Plan Unsure what "Confirmation" is about? Confirmation is a rite of the church through which the confirmand (the person being confirmed) confesses that they believe what the church teaches about Christianity. In order to confess this, they need to know what the church teaches - this is where confirmation classes come in. Our confirmation program will begin with a kick off event on Reformation Day (Wednesday, October 31st) and will last until Easter. (There are many large breaks in that time period we will be taking off.) We need TWO kinds of participants for Confirmation: 1. Learner/Hearer/Confessors - The people learning about what the church teaches about Christianity. 2. Mentors - People who have been previously confirmed and wish to "brush up" by attending a class and being a talking/email partner with a Learner/Hearer/Confessor. Council Slate Reminder President - Bill Lueck Vice-President - Catherine Knickerbocker Secretary - Adam Brink Treasurer - Jim Freeman Worship - Elsa McKinney Christian Education - Cheryl Dance Property - Open Outreach - Leah Paul Elders - Dale Landry and Paul Hoover (existing, Paul's term is up next year) Student Reps - Katie DeWitt, Robert Thompson as President of the Registered Student Organization. Missed a sermon? Good Stuff Some of you have noticed a few typos in bulletins and such here at ULC. To show you how good you have it, here are a few from other churches:Ushers will eat latecomers. (instead of "seat") During the absence of our pastor, we enjoyed the rare privilege of hearing a good sermon when J.F. Stubbs supplied our pulpit. The choir invites any member of the congregation who enjoys sinning to join the choir. Potluck supper: prayer and medication to follow. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community. |
