From Pastor Jay

"You're kind of a cocky guy, aren't you?"  Those are the words that I heard from my Navy recruiter in college.  Needless to say, I'm not in the Navy and never have been.  It wasn't the best pitch to get me in the Navy.  I can think of a couple more enticing things to say to get me to join the Navy...but of course, maybe that's just me being cocky.

The recruiter called me cocky because I was interested in joining the Navy after college, but I wasn't willing to leave college in the middle of my junior year - which was when I was talking to him.  I might have been pulling a bit of a cocky attitude that afternoon too.  I can be that way.

Apparently so could the Apostle Paul.  In the 3rd Chapter of Philippians, the Epistle lesson from last week, Paul is pulling an attitude with the Philippians.  Actually, he's pulling the 'tude with people who are telling the Philippians that they aren't really Christians because they weren't Jews first.  It ticked him off.

Paul says, "You wanna talk Jewish stuff?  Let's talk about Jewish stuff.  I've been circumcised on the right day, not near it, but on it.  I'm not only Jewish, but I still speak Hebrew unlike many Jews today.  I'm one of 6,000 people in Israel that has his religiosity so together that I was invited to a group called "the Separated" (Pharisees).  You want cocky?  I'll give you cocky..."

But that's not what Paul put his hope in.  He had plenty of reason to be cocky, but he said he regarded all of that stuff as rubbish.  Now when you're thinking about "rubbish", stop thinking "recycled paper" and start thinking about what they have to pump out of a Johnny-on-the-Spot.  Yeah, THAT kind of refuse...the kind of rubbish you find in the smurf-blue "water".

Instead, Paul's cockiness came from Jesus.  It came from knowing that the worthiness of knowing Jesus was beyond the worth of anything in his life. Because of that knowledge of Jesus' worthiness Paul was able to stare down the bullies telling the Philippians they were 2nd-class citizens and say, "This may sound cocky....but I know I am, and I'm pretty sure that you are...well...full of rubbish."

May you renew a cocky knowledge of the worth of Jesus in your life, and seeing His worth, may you regard everything else as rubbish.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Trunk or Treat Seeking Volunteers

The Peer Ministry Team is seeking to run a "Trunk or Treat" event at University Lutheran on Reformation Night (October 31st) from 5pm-7pm.  Sign up beginning this Sunday at the University Lutheran table (garnet and gold tablecloth)!!!

The idea of "Trunk or Treat" is to make University Lutheran's parking lot into a non-threatening "neighborhood" where children can go trick-or-treating from one car to the next.

In order to make "Trunk or Treat" a success we need:
  • Volunteers who will help promote the event, especially to families with children and schools
  • Volunteers who will help us the night of the event being runners and floating "do-anything" volunteers (should arrive at University Lutheran by 4pm at the latest)
  • Volunteers who will decorate their cars (nothing too scary or gross...these are kids we're talking about) and hand out candy to children who come (should arrive at University Lutheran by 4pm at the latest)
Please contact Peer Minister Adam Douthwaite for more information.

Children's Sermons to begin this coming Sunday!

Pastor Jay will begin including a children's sermon beginning on October 12th.  Bring a child....it'll be fun.
