From Pastor Jay Luke's Gospel was written in about 55-60 AD, about 20-30 years after Jesus had ascended into heaven. Just before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave the apostles a job to do. He told them to be his "witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8, also a book written by Luke.) It seems as if the apostles took Jesus seriously. 20-30 years after Jesus gave the command, the apostles had moved from evangelizing in only Jersualem, to Jerusalem+Judea, to Jerusalem+Judea+Samaria, and were now evangelizing to "the nations", the Gentiles, the "end of the earth." Luke starts off by explaining to a guy named Theophilus that what he is writing is what he needs to know to start telling his Gentile neighbors about Jesus. In fact, the first four verses of Luke's Gospel point to the idea that Theophilus probably just got done with a sort of confirmation class or new member class. And now? Now Theophilus wants to run his own program so that his friends and neighbors can learn about Jesus. He just needs a little help from his pastor, Luke, in writing down the details. What can I do for you as your pastor to help you tell others about Jesus? With all of the junk on my desk and in my email box and wherever...I always have room for that kind of a task. Some people talked to me about worship that might tell someone new about Jesus. We're going to discuss that. Some of you have talked to me about a new weekday Bible study. We're starting up a new Bible study about "the Case for Faith." Other people have talked to me about Sunday School and Confirmation. Confirmation starts the 31st and we're figuring out the logistics of Sunday School. I'm waiting for your email. Tell me how I can help you tell others about Jesus. Tell me how I can help in this mission we have to bring Jesus and the Gospel to the end of the earth. pastor @ universitylutheranchurch dot org In Christ, Pastor Jay Clear Your Calendars! Some University Lutheran History "In 1964, after fifteen years of assigning nearby pastors to serve as campus chaplains, the District undertook a full-time campus ministry. It called Rev. David Kruse as Campus Pastor, purchased propert at West Jefferson Street, and remodeled the two bedroom house into Luther House. Luther House included a chapel and recreation center for Lutherans who attended FSU, Florida A&M, and Tallahassee Community College. In 1965 the District purchased an adjoining lot to construct a multi-purpose facility." From "Fields to Harvest: LCMS Florida-Georgia District's First 50 Years" by James Prahlow Missed a sermon? John: "Pray that I have clarity in my life." Teresa: "No, I will not do that. Clarity is the last thing you are clinging to instead of God and must let go of." John: "But you seem to have so much clarity in your life...." Teresa: (Laughs) "My whole life I have never had clarity. What I have always had is trust. So I will pray that you trust God." |
