From Pastor Jay

If a tree branch falls outside University Lutheran and no one is there to hear it fall, does it make a sound?  I couldn't tell you.  What I can tell you is that it does leave a lot of shattered glass on the floor.

Today from 3pm to about 4pm, I was out of the office doing a jail visitation.  That's not really my favorite assignment during the week.  It is a time when I have to see lives that have been shattered by mistakes and misguided behavior.  I can see the effects of shatterings just looking at faces there sometimes.

When I returned to the office, I found that a tree branch had fallen off one of our neighborly trees and crashed through the window by the pingpong table.  I cleaned up the shattered glass, called Jim Freeman to find out who we usually use for glass maintenance, and moved the branch over a little so that it was no longer precariously threatening any other windows.

Our lives resemble panes of glass.  We are normally strong.  We can withstand the wind and rain of a hurricane.  We can hold in our own personal atmosphere and let in only the atmosphere of other people when we want to....and we can do it all while seeming transparent.  It's pretty amazing.

But occasionally, something happens to shatter our lives.  Sometimes it's a death.  Sometimes it's a sin or a crime that we've committed.  Sometimes it is someone who does something awful to us.  And we find ourselves looking at the shattered glass on the floor, wondering how something that we had assumed was so strong could be proven so weak.

That's how the disciples must have felt when Jesus first told them He was going to be killed.  It's how the disciples felt when He died on a cross. They were shattered.  It seemed that someone so strong had just been proven to be so weak.

He was shattered on that cross.  He knows brokenness.  He knows what it means when you're shattered in pieces on the floor.  He knows what it is to weep, to be in pain, to be betrayed by His friends, and He remembers it when He sees you in those places.

Because He remembers what it means to be shattered, He went through the pains of every sin, as if He was being pierced by thousands of splinters of glass upon that cross.  He took your splinters, your brokenness, your doubt, your pain, your cynicism, your self-righteousness trying to hide your despicable sin, and your death into Himself.

When you come on Sunday, there will be a clean, new piece of glass by the ping-pong table.  You won't be able to tell where the brokenness happened.  It's the same way with your life because of Christ.  You have been shattered but you will be made whole.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Have a shop-vac?
Since we did have glass break, and the church vacuum cleaner is not the strongest vacuum in the world, if you have a shop-vac or some other high-powered vacuum cleaner - please consider bringing it to church sometime this week just to make sure all the glass shards are picked up.  I'd hate to see a child harmed.

Trunk or Treat Seeking Volunteers

The Peer Ministry Team is seeking to run a "Trunk or Treat" event at University Lutheran on Reformation Night (October 31st) from 5pm-7pm.  Sign up this Sunday at the University Lutheran table (garnet and gold tablecloth)!!!

The idea of "Trunk or Treat" is to make University Lutheran's parking lot into a non-threatening "neighborhood" where children can go trick-or-treating from one car to the next.

In order to make "Trunk or Treat" a success we need:
  • Volunteers who will help promote the event, especially to families with children and schools
  • Volunteers who will help us the night of the event being runners and floating "do-anything" volunteers (should arrive at University Lutheran by 4pm at the latest)
  • Volunteers who will decorate their cars (nothing too scary or gross...these are kids we're talking about) and hand out candy to children who come (should arrive at University Lutheran by 4pm at the latest)
Please contact Peer Minister Adam Douthwaite for more information.

German Service is December 3rd!!!
We are seeking volunteers to help plan the German Service this year!  It was a great success last year, we hope to build on that success.

Thanks for the work day!
Thank you to everyone who made it out to the work day last Saturday.  We were able to rake and do some yard work as well as fixing the sink in the men's room and the light above the pingpong table.

Christmas Party Host????
Can you host the annual Christmas party?  It will be the afternoon/evening of December 14th.  We need a host for this event.  Contact Cheryl Dance.

Prayer List

(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

That we might recognize the wholeness that Christ has given us.

For All Parents coming for Parents' weekend, Randee Garrett and Crystal Berner and all those who are traveling this weekend.

For Jen Kandzer who is getting over being sick.

For patience and love for those people that are most difficult to deal with, that God might soften the hearts of those who stereotype as a way of life.

Chris Hahn who is dealing with the brokenness of cancer, going through a bone marrow transplant.

For all those who live waiting for total forgiveness, who aren't ready to let go of their sins in confession, that they may be spurred by the Gospel to come to Christ.

Every week we be pray for a few students.  This week we pray for: Lucus M., Nathan M., John Odom, Jamey P., James R., Jackelyn R., Jesse R., Sonia R., Erik S., and Michael S.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.
