From Pastor Jay

Tomorrow is  Reformation Day.  It's a day when little children go door to door asking for candy in remembrance of Martin Luther, who posted 95 Theses on a church door....thusly children go door to door, to remember that first Wittenberg church door.  Or at least that would make me happy.

Actually, if you say "happy Reformation Day," to someone tomorrow they're likely to look at you like you just landed from a foreign land...or planet.  They'll tell you, "It's Halloween, you wingnut..."  And then, if you're like me, you'll frown a little.

Of course it makes sense.  Nobody celebrates Reformation Day anymore.  The most positive thing I get when I talk about Reformation Day is "oh yeah, I took a class on the Reformation era once...it was nice."  Fantastic.  I'm so happy for you.

This year on October 13th, if you visited Google.com, you found a special redesign of the Google logo, a special logo that celebrated the birthday of Paddington Bear.  That's great and all.  I don't really care about Paddington Bear, but I don't hate him.  Still, I thought it was funny that he got billing above the other person we celebrate that day - Christopher Columbus.  That's right, Google thought Paddington Bear's Birthday was a bigger deal than Columbus Day.  Maybe that's why my mail didn't come...because of Paddington.

You never knew Christopher Columbus and Martin Luther had so much in common, did you?  Of course, have we really given people a reason to remember Martin Luther and the early Lutheran reformers?  Have we burned with the freedom that Luther burned with? With the Gospel fever of those early Lutherans? With the missionary zeal of famous Lutheran missionaries like William Loehe?  Or have we just become the perpetuation of what Garrison Keillor calls us, "God's frozen people"?

This Reformation Day, make it a point to stop being frozen.  Stop living life in such a way that you make Paddington Bear look more exciting that who you are: a justified saint before God because of the sacrifice of Jesus.  Read the Bible.  Live the Gospel.  Experience the Reformation!

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Mystery Microwave
A mystery microwave appeared in the University Lutheran kitchen yesterday while Pastor Jay was making copies for the +Vespers+ service.  You were seen by a couple of Peer Ministers, but they didn't know who you were.  Please contact Pastor Jay so we can thank you properly.

Trunk or Treat
Come to University Lutheran from 5pm-7pm for "Trunk or Treat"  on Reformation Night (October 31st).

We need all the kids we can get - so bring a kid!

The idea of "Trunk or Treat" is to make University Lutheran's parking lot into a non-threatening "neighborhood" where children can go trick-or-treating from one car to the next.

Please contact Peer Minister Adam Douthwaite for more information.

German Service is December 3rd!!!
We are seeking volunteers to help plan the German Service this year!  It was a great success last year, we hope to build on that success.

Everyone interested in Helping ULC Grow, remember that you only have two Sundays (Nov. 2nd and Nov. 9th) to attend another church and see how they treat first time visitors.  We meet again on November 16th.  Miss the last meeting but still interested?  Contact Pastor Jay.

Good Stuff

Ways to emulate Martin Luther this Reformation Day:

  • Go to the bar and pray - Martin Luther is said to have a three handled beer stein that he brought to pubs with him.  Before he would order his next beer he would say the 10 commandments holding one handle, the Creed saying the next, the Lord's Prayer holding the 3rd.  If he couldn't complete all three without stumbling over the words, he didn't order another beer and went home.
  • Plant an apple tree - Martin Luther said that if he knew Jesus was coming tomorrow, he would plant an apple tree today.
  • Write down your thoughts about one thing that you question in the church - The 95 theses are all about one issue (indulgences), Martin Luther began the Reformation with just one issue.
  • Love your spouse - Martin Luther described a perfect marriage with the advice, "Let the wife make the husband glad to come home and let him make her sorry to see him leave for work in the morning."
  • Deflect a compliment - Martin Luther once, deflecting a compliment, said: "The Holy Spirit did everything, Melanchthon and I just sat around and drank beer."

Prayer List

(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

That we might recognize the wholeness that Christ has given us.

All the friends and family of Kay Freeman who passed away this past Sunday, may they find comfort and peace which comes from God.

Amy, friend of Crystal Berner, involved in a car accident this past weekend - thanksgiving for her recovery so far and continued blessings from God.

For Jen Kandzer who is dealing with illness.

For all of us, that we may realize that eternity has already begun in our lives at the moment of our Baptisms.

Chris Hahn who continues to deal with cancer as it has begun to aggressively spread once again.

For the homeless of Tallahassee, that given the example of Kay Freeman's work, we may continue to work for their gentrification.

Every week we be pray for a few students.  This week we pray for: Michael S., David S., Kara S., Christopher W., Sarah Y., Marc C., Thomas A., Travis R., Robert G, Steven S., and Joseph B.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.
