Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

Those who have gone before us in the faith, and those who have shown us the path of the righteous.

People who deal with addiction, and ourselves that we may realize when we are addicted and need help.

Betty Knickerbocker who is recovering.

All those whose hearts are filled with sorrow when they see children trick-or-treating because they have lost a child or another reason.

Jim, Linda Andrew's friend who is having difficulties.

The proclamation of the Gospel into Germany, the homeland of the Reformation, which is now well over half non-Christian.

Augustine, friend of the Ross family, who is dealing with heart problems.

Thanksgiving for the life of Bill Lueck's friend, Pamela Hoke.

Students who are dealing with many projects, tests, and other school work that seems so heavy now.

Thanksgiving for Noah Diestelhorst, and for the life of Al Lynn Diestelhorst, Scott's grandfather who passed away only a little while after his great-grandson was born.

Blake Kandzer who is still awaiting word on tests.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.

From Pastor Jay

Happy Reformation Day!  On October 31st, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 theses - 95 arguing points - on the "bulletin board" of his day, the local church door.

I have held a long standing tradition of posting the 95 theses on a Roman Catholic church door every Reformation Day.  Every October 31st, I risk a misdemeanor ticket for vandalism.

I've thought about what that first conversation with a police officer is going to sound like when I get caught.  It would probably go something like this:

POLICEMAN: "So, you're posting this piece of paper up because you're a Lutheran, huh?"
PJ: "Mnn...yep.."
POLICEMAN: "...and what is this supposed to do?"
PJ: "Recreate what Martin Luther did, he put these arguing points up on the church door so that when people would come by they would see them and consider their faith lives and ask themselves what was truly Scriptural."
POLICEMAN: "...and who do you think would see them today?"
PJ: "...uhh...the priest...maybe a couple of stray parishioners...a janitor."
POLICEMAN: "Riiight.  So here's your ticket.  You're lucky I didn't haul you in.  We thought you were one of those weirdo satanists at first glance...vandalizing a church..."

Instead of tacking a copy of the 95 Theses to a random Roman Catholic church door this year, maybe I should follow Luther's example a little more clearly.

Maybe I should try to address problems in the Christian church like institutionalism, quietism, and "country club Christianity."  Maybe I should talk to the person who lives next door to me and invite them to church.  Maybe I should address people in the bulletin boards of my day - youtube, the internet, facebook, text messages, and podcasts - giving them the Gospel in any way possible. And if I go to jail or get a ticket for that, it'll be worth it....I'll say "Here I stand," while they're taking my mugshot.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Good Stuff

This has always been one of my favorite jokes: A man sobering up from the night before is sitting through the Sunday sermon, finding it long and boring. Still feeling hung over and tired, he finally nods off.
The pastor has been watching him all along, noticing his apparent hangover and is disgusted. At the end of the sermon, the preacher decides to make an example of him.
He says to his congregation, "All those wishing to have a place in heaven, please stand."
The whole room stands up except, of course, the sleeping man. Then the preacher says even more loudly, "And he who would like to find a place in hell please STAND UP!"
The weary man catching only the last part groggily stands up, only to find that he's the only one standing.
Confused and embarrassed he says, "I don't know what we're voting on here, Pastor, but it sure seems like you and me are the only ones standing for it!"
