From Pastor Jay I have held a long standing tradition of posting the 95 theses on a Roman Catholic church door every Reformation Day. Every October 31st, I risk a misdemeanor ticket for vandalism. I've thought about what that first conversation with a police officer is going to sound like when I get caught. It would probably go something like this: POLICEMAN: "So, you're posting this piece of paper up because you're a Lutheran, huh?" PJ: "Mnn...yep.." POLICEMAN: "...and what is this supposed to do?" PJ: "Recreate what Martin Luther did, he put these arguing points up on the church door so that when people would come by they would see them and consider their faith lives and ask themselves what was truly Scriptural." POLICEMAN: "...and who do you think would see them today?" PJ: "...uhh...the priest...maybe a couple of stray parishioners...a janitor." POLICEMAN: "Riiight. So here's your ticket. You're lucky I didn't haul you in. We thought you were one of those weirdo satanists at first glance...vandalizing a church..." Instead of tacking a copy of the 95 Theses to a random Roman Catholic church door this year, maybe I should follow Luther's example a little more clearly. Maybe I should try to address problems in the Christian church like institutionalism, quietism, and "country club Christianity." Maybe I should talk to the person who lives next door to me and invite them to church. Maybe I should address people in the bulletin boards of my day - youtube, the internet, facebook, text messages, and podcasts - giving them the Gospel in any way possible. And if I go to jail or get a ticket for that, it'll be worth it....I'll say "Here I stand," while they're taking my mugshot. In Christ, Pastor Jay Clear Your Calendars! New and Important

Send a Card The Diestelhorsts - The Birth of Noah Diestelhorst - October 29th Richard Mwegoha - Birthday - November 5th Good Stuff This has always been one of my favorite jokes: A man sobering up from the night before is sitting through the Sunday sermon, finding it long and boring. Still feeling hung over and tired, he finally nods off.The pastor has been watching him all along, noticing his apparent hangover and is disgusted. At the end of the sermon, the preacher decides to make an example of him. He says to his congregation, "All those wishing to have a place in heaven, please stand." The whole room stands up except, of course, the sleeping man. Then the preacher says even more loudly, "And he who would like to find a place in hell please STAND UP!" The weary man catching only the last part groggily stands up, only to find that he's the only one standing. Confused and embarrassed he says, "I don't know what we're voting on here, Pastor, but it sure seems like you and me are the only ones standing for it!" |
