From the Pastor I write these comments on a very special day. As far as the Church is concerned, today is “All Saints Day” and a major gathering point for the family of faith. Personally, it is November First and the first day I consider myself “back to work” and no longer on medical disability due to a bout with Lymphoma. Let’s have another “Cheer” for both the “Saints” and for skilled physicians and great Chemicals! Liturgically speaking, ( Lutherans follow an order of Lessons and Themes called “The Church Year”) the combination of themes this time of year are hard to beat. Last Sunday, we were reminded of our Lutheran/Protestant heritage by observing “Reformation Sunday.” At the heart of that celebration is the on-going Grace of God that calls the Church into being and sustains the Church against all who would seek to destroy it. The Reformation themes of “Justification by Grace through Faith” and “Continuing in the Word” ( The Word: as in Holy Scriptures and the Word made Flesh in the Person of Jesus) are themes that rally the Church: that corporate body of believers called into being by the power of the Holy Spirit. This coming Sunday is the flip-side of that celebration as we observe “All Saints Sunday.” While Reformation Sunday focuses on the corporate Church, All Saints Sunday focuses on all those individuals who have applied the Reformation and Biblical principles to the way they live their lives. In order to get a clear idea of who is at the center of our joyful gathering, just step in front of a mirror. While a certain part of All Saints Sunday calls us to remember those who have served our Lord and the Church well and have gone on to their heavenly reward, the primary focus is on YOU…and ME… as we take the challenge of the Word seriously and live out our lives of faith. As I return to my Pastoral duties, I am so reminded of all the “Saints” that have carried on this ministry in my absence. University Lutheran is blessed to number them among the Saints. “Way to GO, Saints.” And keep it up….. As we get ready for FSU PARENTS WEEKEND, we issue a special invitation to join us for our “tailgate” gathering before the game and, if travel plans allow, the invitation extends to Sunday Worship as well. Since we have a Noon game, BRUNCH begins at 10 AM Saturday, with Sunday WORSHIP at 11 AM. I also extend a “challenge” to all those who I have not yet met …and to some of our regulars I have not seen since “coming back.” Have a GREAT weekend! From the President Dear friends, families, and members of University Lutheran, Last Sunday, it was great to have Pastor Dohrman "officially back" with us, especially for Reformation Sunday. We thank God, modern medicine, and all of your prayers for this to be possible. Since this coming week-end is Parents' Week-end, there may be a number of parents here for the game. Please join them for the tailgate activities on Saturday. If you would like to bring something to share that would be appreciated. Thanks to all who stayed last Sunday for the congregational meeting when we elected the officers for this coming year. We thank all who served on the council this past year. This Sunday we will install the new council. Just a reminder that the young adults will serve dinner at Hope Community on Thursday. However anyone who is interested in helping to serve is welcome to do so. Please contact Catherine Knickerbocker, if you will or would like to serve. If you are in town on Sunday morning, please join us for worship at 11 o'clock. We would love to see you. God's blessings,
Elsa McKinney UUU
State offers online emergency-contact information
update
![]() A new emergency-contact database through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Web site now allows you to register two names with three phone numbers that first-responders can access from around the state. Student Activities at ULC Any ideas for a youth social would be greatly appreciated! Also, next month we will be having our Christmas Party/Social: December 8, 2006 around 7:00pm (tentative). Any and all ideas for this event are also welcome! Contact Crystal, Randee and Danielle at peerministers@universitylutheranchurch.org UUU University Lutheran Young Adults serve dinner Young adult volunteers will serve dinner at HOPE Community this Thursday, 11/9. Please contact Cathy Knickerbocker for additional information. Just one more excellent way for you to fill those volunteer hours. Students at Florida State University are making a significant difference in the Tallahassee area through community service. According to recent statistics, over 270,000 hours of community service were completed by nearly 4,000 FSU students between May 2005 and April 2006. In 2005, the Independent Sector estimated the value of a volunteer hour at $18.04, which gives nonprofit agencies and charitable organizations a tool to help quantify the contributions of volunteers. Based on this information, FSU students have contributed nearly $5 million worth of time and effort to the Tallahassee community this past academic year. For more information about the Center for Civic Education and Service, and the programs and services it offers, contact Lisa Brown, Program Assistant, at the Center for Civic Education and Service at 850-644-3342 or via email at lbrown@admin.fsu.edu. UUU Annual Chili Cook Off Every year at Homecoming, we have a chili cook off at our tailgate get together. We need you to prepare the best chili possible, and bring it to our Homecoming tailgate on November 18th. Please let Catherine Knickerbocker know that you will bring some chili. This will also be a perfect opportunity to meet and visit with Pastor Mark Couch and his wife, Melody from Western Michigan University.UUU
