From the Pastor
![]() Hello from University Lutheran…. I hope everyone found a safe place inside as Wednesday’s storms rolled through our area. With all that rain and wind, tornado watches and lightening, the signal was loud and clear…”There’ll be a change in the weather.” This homecoming football weekend will have a distinct chill to it that will warm the hearts of many Northern Lutherans. Trouble is, in our ULC spirit of hospitality, we have invited the campus pastor and his wife from Western Michigan University to join us for the Homecoming Weekend... thinking that we might offer them a mild November weekend rather than lake effect early winter. Well it seems like Tallahassee weather will feel more like Western Michigan weather than, well, Western Michigan. And speaking of change and following up on last week’s comments from Luther regarding the Christian’s relationship to government, we did see quite a change as a result of the elections this past week. Paul Harvey has a syndicated radio segment that adds little known information to well-known events and persons called “The Rest of the Story.” Well, the rest of the story about the relationship between an active faith and the government is that when government is not in synch with the will of the people, a Christian has the responsibility to use the accepted channels to be a part of changing the landscape. And that’s what happened. And that is the “rest of the story.” Yet be reminded, “Change” does not so much speak a word of judgment about the past, as it speaks a word of hope for the future. Enough of this “heavy” stuff. It’s Homecoming Week and Weekend! It’s time for some good old- fashioned fun and also time to affirm that, just as God is by our side in the struggle for justice and equality and the pursuit of wisdom, God also laughs with us and shares our times of enjoyment. There is no event so mundane as to warrant God’s no-show. (Well, almost. While driving to Tampa early this week I heard reports about the Annual Rock-Scissor-Paper tournament… and about the gathering at the Houston airport of “The Society of Dull Males” whose first task was to determine why the baggage carousel moves in a certain direction rather than the other.) Anyway, with all the special events, the skits, the parade and the football game, we hope you will include SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP (11:00 AM) as a part of your weekend… we especially would like a full house to impress our guests! On Saturday, tailgate lunch will be available at the Church beginning at noon. This is CHILI COOK-OFF WEEKEND. Bring friends and family. If you’re stuck for a place to park, call me (443-7588) and we’ll try to squeeze you in somewhere. Take care, be well and God Bless… Pastor D. UUUFrom the President Dear friends, families, and members of University Lutheran, It is so soothing to hear rain outside, as I write this. I hope all of you have had a wonderful week. This coming Saturday we have our chili cook off tailgate get together. If possible, please plan to stop by church not only to sample some chili, but also to meet Pastor Mark Couch and his wife Melody, who will visit us this week-end. Pastor Couch is the campus pastor at Western Michigan. Please come to meet and welcome them.
If you cannot make it on Saturday, join us for worship on Sunday and for our pre-Thanksgiving reception after the service. If you can, finger foods would be appreciated for the reception. We would love to see you. We continue to keep Pastor Dohrman in our prayers, as he will undergo several medical tests next week. We also think about and pray for the families of Cheryl Dance and Debbie Buenrostro, whose fathers are in need of extra care. We continue to sponsor a room at the HOPE Community Center. If you would like to participate, please ask either Pastor or me about that. We think about all of you, and thank God that you are part of our community. If you would like to have any special events or prayer requests mentioned in this space, please let me know. Thrivent Build Habitat Home Dedicated The Habitat House recently completed through the cooperation of Tallahassee’s Lutheran Churches…with great assistance from THRIVENT… will be dedicated Sunday afternoon at 2:30 PM. Directions are available on the table near the Church entrance. UUU Welcome Alums, Pastor Couch, Melody After worship Sunday, there will be a brief reception to welcome back Alums, add a hospitable closing touch to the weekend, and give us an opportunity to meet the Chouch’s from Western Michigan. UUU THANKSGIVING PROJECT University Lutheran will be renewing its sponsorship of a room at the Hope Community… a transitional housing and support facility for persons experiencing homeless as they move on to independent living. We need assistance in providing items for that room: Pillows, Towels, Sheets, etc. There is a sign-up sheet at Church and we hope you will select an item to purchase for the room. Thanks to those who have already made a commitment to help.
UUU Student Activities at ULC Any ideas for a youth social would be greatly appreciated! Also, next month we will be having our Christmas Party/Social: December 8, 2006 around 7:00pm (tentative). Any and all ideas for this event are also welcome! Contact Crystal, Randee and Danielle at peerministers@universitylutheranchurch.org UUU Alternative Christmas Market This is a great place to find that "special" holiday gift to replace the usual socks and shirts. Visitors will have the opportunity to make a donation, on behalf of those on our holiday shopping list, to over 30 charities and receive a gift card to send them announcing your gift that keeps on giving. This is the 20th anniversary of the largest showcase of local charities and third world fair trade crafts in the area at John Wesley Church. John Wesley Church, 1689 Old St. Augustine Road
