Special for Thanksgiving

Stuck on campus? Don't despair

By Jennifer Jefferson
DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

Students who would normally spend Thanksgiving with their families are staying in Tallahassee because they have to work.

So, students were left to make other arrangements to celebrate the holiday.

The restaurants in Oglesby Union have been closed all week, and the dining halls aren't open today, so the Inter-Residence Hall Council, the Pride Student Union and the Women's Center have put together a Thanksgiving dinner for students who are stuck on campus.

The dinner will be at 7 p.m. in the commons area of Bryan Hall. It's free to students, and the turkey and fixings are being bought at the grocery store.

“This is real Thanksgiving food,” said Becky Young, a senior political science student from Fort Lauderdale who helped organize the event.

Young, who is British, will be going home for the holiday, but she thought it was important that the students who were unable to go home had something good to eat. Besides, she doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving.

Andy Wades' parents are “not happy” that he won't be in Tampa for Thanksgiving.

He has to work this weekend.

"They understand,” he said.

Instead, he has dubbed today “Booze Giving.”

He and friends are getting Thanksgiving dinner catered from Boston Market and drowning their sorrows in alcohol, the senior political science student said.

For freshman psychology student Mark Starr, this will be his first Thanksgiving away from home.

"I'm working on trying to get a job,” he said.

So, he and his roommates pooled their money to get groceries for today's dinner. The five students designated one person to cook.

It might not be his mother's sweet-potato pie, but for him, it was $20 well-spent.

Still stuck on campus? Join us at ULC
"Welcome" as printed in the worship folder for Nov. 26 2006

We are pleased that you have joined us this morning.

On holiday weekends, such as Thanksgiving, things are a bit unpredictable around here attendance wise. If you have returned for the big football game, we are especially happy to see you and have you worship with us.

This morning's thoughts will mingle some thanksgiving themes along with the themes from Christ the King Sunday... the last Sunday of the Church year and the beginning of our Liturgical "Holiday" season.

If you are visiting with us, please sign our guest register. ULC is a Lutheran faith community committed to a ministry of Word and Sacrament. That means we proclaim the power of the Gospel and the access we have to God's throne of Grace through Holy Communion and Baptism.

We pray that our time together... and the taste of the Eucrist... will be just what you need for these cool pre-winter weekends.
