Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

That Christ may come soon and that His full glory in the Resurrection be amongst us.

ULC's Church Council as they act on decisions made at their first meeting.

Ruth and Wilbert Buenrostro as they continue to deal with health problems.

Veterans, especially those bearing physical and emotional wounds, that they may be comforted that all war shall cease when Christ comes again.

The friends and family and all those who mourn the loss of former FSU student Catherine Barclift.

For weakness in our lives that we might see Christ's strength through it.

Kim Alford who is recovering from surgery.

All those incarcerated, that they may feel the freedom found within Jesus' love.

Courage to spend more time in prayer.

Thanksgiving for Rich and Jennifer's house saved from fires in California.

For Warren Schave as he continues to recover.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.

From Pastor Jay

Have you ever taken the last parking spot?

In our church council meeting, people here want to remind you - if you can walk, consider leaving one of the 'really good' spots for a visitor or someone who can't walk all that well, or a family with a gaggle of young kids.  Paul in Thessalonians says that people should not live in idleness and should not be mere busybodies not doing any work.  We really could cut off your snack and coffee priviledges.  Thank goodness Lutherans are a people of grace.

How about when you get here?  Who do you talk to?  Did you realize that we averaged about 2 new people a Sunday in October?  Don't you think it would be easy to spot 2 new people in a crowd of people that you've seen before?

Maybe you just don't know what to say.  It's easy, do what I do.  Say, "I don't think I've met you yet..." If you have, you might think you look like an idiot - but you might just be the nicest person they've met that morning.  You'll look like a saint.  Maybe a saint with bad memory, but a saint nonetheless.

Watch this video.

I heard once of a pastor who said, "the pastor does the sermon, everyone else does the message."  And that message is a message we know well.  That message is that the God of the Entire Universe...the God of ALL Existence...the God of Eternity...He loves you.  He loves you more than a parking spot or fear of meeting new people.  He loves you enough to die for you....and to die for you once and for all.  You don't have to die to show people you love them.  You just have to give them the message.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Clear Your Calendars!  New and Important Calendar Items!

November 15th - "Case for Faith - 'How does the church explain the ugly things done in the name of Christianity?'"
At 8 pm on Thursday at the Starbucks on FSU's campus, join us as we talk about Christianity, especially this week, about the 'dark spots' of Christianity like the inquisition, anti-semitism, and religious wars.

November 17th - Maryland vs FSU (home game)
Come by at 10am or so and tailgate for a bit before the noon kickoff game against Maryland.

November 18th - New Bible Study Starts Up - "WISDOM"
Join us at 10am on Sunday for "WISDOM" a Bible study which looks at four books of the Bible commonly called the "Wisdom books."  These are Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs/Song of Solomon.  Please consider looking up two Psalms for this Sunday - one you know and another one that you didn't know.

November 21st - Thanksgiving Eve Service - 7pm
Come give thanks to the Lord Our God by coming to church on Wednesday night at 7pm.  We will host a short thanksgiving worship service followed by refreshments. (Dinner and NOOMA, Choir, and Formation are all cancelled this Wednesday).

German Service!

Many thanks to everyone who signed up and said they would be interested in a German service this Advent.  The German service will be at 7pm on December 12th (2nd Wednesday in Advent).
Invite your friends!  This may be just the way to get them into the doors of University Lutheran and get them to start considering who Christ is in their lives.

Special Worship Services

The Council in it's last meeting approved the following as the worship schedule for this Thanksgiving-Advent-Christmas season:

  • Thanksgiving Eve - November 22 - 7pm, with light reception to follow.
  • Advent Services - December 5, 12, and 19 at 7pm.
  • German Advent Service - December 12th at 7pm with reception to follow.
  • Christmas Eve Service - 5:30pm
  • No Christmas Day Service
  • New Year's Eve Service - 5:30pm
  • No New Year's Day Service

Please consider contacting Elsa McKinney, Worship Chair with suggestions or ways you can help during this busy time of the church year.

Parking Lot Struggles

The Council would like to officially remind those who worship with us that parking is available for able bodied people behind the Garnet and Gold store, in the parking lot to the side of church on Jefferson, and at the Muslim center next door (please leave by 2pm if you park at the Muslim center) and ask that some parking in the main lot behind church be left for visitors and those with trouble walking.

Two Volunteers Needed for Circut Convocation!

Two volunteers are needed from University Lutheran to help with the upcoming Circuit Convocation on Saturday, April 26.  Please contact Pastor Jay to volunteer.

Go to the Messiah, Help Crystal Berner

Crystal Berner, one of our Peer Ministers, needs to sell 7 tickets to Handel's Messiah at Ruby Diamond Auditorium directed by Andre Thomas.  Please help her by buying a discounted ticket from her ($10 instead of $18 if you buy from Crystal, or $5 if you're a student).  Contact Crystal via email by clicking this link.

Relay For Life

In April 2008, FSU will be conducting a Relay for Life event with the American Cancer Society.  Money raised by Relay for Life will go towards finding cures and medical help for people dealing with cancer.  Many of us know people who have or are currently dealing with cancer in their lives, including Pastor Dohrman.

We need both STUDENT and NON-STUDENT representation.  Please email Pastor Jay to begin the process of having a Relay for Life time in honor of Pastor Dohrman's valiant struggle against cancer.

Finals Frenzy

In about one month finals will be upon students of FSU, FAMU and TCC.  Finals week for FSU is December 10-14.  During this stressful time of year for students, many campus ministry centers host breakfasts, destressing activities, quiet study places, and a variety of other things.
Help University Lutheran serve students as they live out their vocations in this time of testing.  Email Peer Minister Randee Garrett for more information.

Missed a sermon?

Since my dad preached last Sunday, no text of the sermon is available.  Watch for next week! - PJ

Send a Card

Consider sending a card or celebrating with the following people in some way this week:
Florence Mohre's (Paul Hoover's Mom) Birthday - November 20

Good Stuff

Ask someone you love to go on a 15 minute walk with you.  It'll make you smile a whole lot longer than any stupid joke I could put in here, and I promise you'll remember it longer.- PJ
