From Pastor Jay
I'm behind.
I've been behind for something like 3 weeks now. I think the
curse that I'm apparently under has something to do with daylight
savings time because the two showed up at the same time. This
newsletter is a day late, there are several other things I haven't
gotten to yet, and there are other things --- well, that just aren't
going to happen. It's been that way for 3 weeks....and it feels
like it's been forever.
Our lives get busy, they get frantic, and if you're like me - they then
get irritable. People who know me well know that there is at
least one sure-fire way to get me in a bad mood, and that is to make me
feel like my time is being wasted...especially when I'm in a
pinch.
Time is important to me. Time is not money for me, it is
infinitely more valuable. If you give me a choice between 25
extra dollars a day and 25 extra minutes I day, I will choose the 25
minutes without batting an eye.
These last few Sundays before we begin the season of Advent focuses us
on the return of Christ. Epistle readings from I Thessalonian 5,
Gospel readings from Matthew 25, and Old Testament readings from cheery
"day of the Lord" types like Amos focus us on a day that most of the
world still calls "doomsday".
The History Channel continues its onslaught of ridiculous programming
about how the end of the world is coming in 2012. Nervous Swiss
people wonder when the Large Haldron Collider will blow. The
whole world waits...popping Zoloft like it's PEZ for anxiety...for the
end of existence.
Being someone who is concerned about time, you would think I would
dread this "doomsday" that the Gospels speak of. I don't. I
actually pray for it to come - daily. When it says in
Thessalonians that we will a trumpet and an archangel...I actually get
kind of excited.
I get excited because I know what that day promises. It promises
eternity...a "time" that will never run out. But that isn't all
it promises. It promises that sin, the thing that detracts from
our enjoyment of life - the thing that makes us feel like we have even
less time that what we do - that will be gone too.
All of that time will be ours. All of the possibilities.
All of the books we could ever write or read. All of the
paintings we could draw. All of the kisses we could savor.
All of the hugs we could hold. All the newsletters I could
muster. All of the time we could want, and more...I can't wait
for this "doomsday."
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

This Week's
"Pastor's Challenge"
The text of this week's sermon can be found at jWinters.com. This
week we talked about making the sign of the cross in the children's
sermon.
Every week, I try to live out my sermon in my life in some way.
(I hear it's good to try to practice what you preach.) This week
I'm making it a point to make the sign of the cross on my forehead and
on my heart, just like we talked about in the children's sermon. You have two opportunities to make
the sign of the cross when you get up in the morning before the next
sermon - take them!!!

Pastor Steinmueller walked into the bar
one afternoon to find three of his parishioners sitting around having a
beer. He went to the first one and said, "Bob, tell me...do you
want to go to heaven?" Bob, of course, said "yes". "Then
get against that wall there," said Pastor Steinmueller, pointing.
Pastor Steinmueller went to the next
parishioner saying, "Susan, tell me...do you want to go to
heaven?" Susan, of course, said "yes" as well. Pastor
Steinmeuller instructed her to get against the wall as well.
Further down the bar sat John, a member of
Pastor Steinmueller's church, but one who only came twice a year.
"Do you want to go to heaven?" Steinmueller asked. Looking around
nervously to see if the pastor was perhaps talking to someone else,
John says, "No."
Pastor Steinmeuller was aghast and said,
"Are you going to tell me that when you die, you don't want to go to
heaven?" John let out a sigh of
relief...."Oh....THEN...yes. My apologies, pastor, I thought you
were getting a group ready to go right now."
