(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

All victims of the storms in Bangladesh and Southern Asia.

Thanksgiving for Adam and Megan's annoucement that Megan is pregnant.

Safe travel for all those going home and other places this holiday season.

Thanksgiving for 96 years of life for Katy Rae Rehling.

Peace and comfort for those who are experiencing the first Thanksgiving without a member or their family or a loved one.

Christ's quick return, that we may have no more tears but live out eternity in thanksgiving.

True gratitude in our lives for the glorious gifts God has given us.

Our church musicians as added services add to their workload.

Students who are getting ready to take finals.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.

From Pastor Jay

Well I feel dumb.  Some of you got an email from me today informing you that the Thanksgiving Eve service was on Nov. 21st, not Nov. 22nd as I had publicized before.  My goof and confession, as many of my confessed goofs turn out, was used by God to speak an important message to me.

Tommorow is Thanksgiving.  Many of us will have confessions of eating too much or saying the wrong thing to Aunt Mable. Some of us will look at this Thanksgiving in the same way that we looked at Thanksgivings of recent past, complaining that they're not the same - that "Turkey Day" doesn't mean as much as it did in the past.

If you're brave, I have a suggestion and some advice.

The best Thanksgiving advice I ever got was from an elderly woman in a historically black Lutheran church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  She told me and my youth group that before she asked for anything of God, she would count her ten fingers.  She would remember all of the bad things she had ever done with those ten fingers.  But then she would remember all of the graces that had come to her through those hands, like recieving communion, the wedding ring of her late husband on her finger, and holding her grandson.

If you're brave, tommorow, take a little time and count your fingers.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Tell Your Friends About The German Service!

The people who have been putting together the German Service this year have given you an early Christmas present.  The great thing about this present is that it can be shared with your co-workers and friends.

Please consider downloading the German Service Poster and hanging it up in your cubicle or asking your favorite business to display it.

Two Volunteers Needed for Circut Convocation!

Please sign up.

Two volunteers are needed from University Lutheran to help with the upcoming Circuit Convocation on Saturday, April 26.  Please contact Pastor Jay to volunteer.

Children's Bulletin

On the first Sunday in Advent, University Lutheran will reach out to its children by producing a "Children's Bulletin", which encourages children to see the flow of our worship service and to see how God impacts their lives.

Relay For Life

Please sign up.

In April 2008, FSU will be conducting a Relay for Life event with the American Cancer Society.  Money raised by Relay for Life will go towards finding cures and medical help for people dealing with cancer.  Many of us know people who have or are currently dealing with cancer in their lives, including Pastor Dohrman.

We need both STUDENT and NON-STUDENT representation.  Please email Pastor Jay to begin the process of having a Relay for Life time in honor of Pastor Dohrman's valiant struggle against cancer.

Finals Frenzy

Please sign up.

In about one month finals will be upon students of FSU, FAMU and TCC.  Finals week for FSU is December 10-14.  During this stressful time of year for students, many campus ministry centers host breakfasts, destressing activities, quiet study places, and a variety of other things.

We would like volunteers to help with a breakfast program on Dec. 10-14.

Help University Lutheran serve students as they live out their vocations in this time of testing.  Email Peer Minister Randee Garrett for more information.

Missed a sermon?

Not only did I give you the text of this last week's sermon, but I wrote several other blog articles including something about contemporary worship and something about chopsticks.  Visit jWinters.com

Consider sending a card or celebrating with the following people in some way this week:
Shannon Groskreutz's Birthday - November 24th
Linda Andrew's Birthday - November 24th

Good Stuff

Things to do to liven up Thanksgiving Dinner:
  • When everyone goes around the table and says what they are thankful for, say, "I'm thankful I didn't get caught," and refuse to say anything else.
  • Bring a date who only talks about the tragic and abusive conditions at turkey farms.
  • During mid-meal, turn to the cook and say, "See? I told you it wouldn't matter if the turkey was past the expiration date."
  • Count your fingers and count your blessings.
