From Pastor Jay
Last newsletter I
started talking about Christmas already. I skipped right over
Thanksgiving. It's easy to forget to give thanks every now and
then. Today, I'm making it a point to not forget to give thanks.
I give thanks for 522 days. From the date of my ordination to the
date of me writing this note to you all, I have been a pastor - your
pastor - for 522 days. I give thanks for the relationship that
God has fostered between us and I give thanks for the relationship that
you have with Him that so often is so apparent when I look into your
eyes.
I give thanks for 44 years. University Lutheran's first
inception, Luther House, became a reality on these hallowed grounds 44
years ago and has actively sought to reach FSU students with the Gospel
of Jesus ever since.
I give thanks for 10 years. Ten years ago we took the "Center"
off the front of the building so that it just reads "University
Lutheran". We did that because 10 years ago we became a much more
open community than what we had been - we became a fully functioning
church. 10 years ago God saw it fit to make this community deeper
and richer with the addition of the word "church" to our nomenclature.
I give thanks for 24.7 pounds. Yesterday I cooked my first (24.7
pound!) turkey for our "Shoesgiving" event. Many of you came out, shoes
in hand ready to give to other people who needed them more than you
did. Not only do I give thanks for the good work produced in you
through giving away your shoes, but more for the time I got to spend
talking and laughing with you.
I give thanks for 20 people a week that we have been praying for and I
have been trying to share the Gospel with: 10 each week who are
self-designated Lutherans (390 in all this year), 10 each week who are
our neighbors living in the community around us. I give thanks
that soon this mission of contacting people will be shared by more and
more community members at University Lutheran.
I give thanks for 33 years and an eternity. Jesus lived
approximately 33 years on this earth before He was crucified and then
rose from the tomb. I give thanks for those 33 years and for the
eternity that He lives in that He has opened for all of us.
May we always give thanks and praise to our Lord!
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

This Week's
"Pastor's Challenge"
The text of this week's sermon can be found at jWinters.com.
Every week, I try to live out my sermon in my life in some way.
(I hear it's good to try to practice what you preach.)
This week's sermon was about anonymity. Who do you normally
regard as "human furniture"? The clerk at the gas station?
The person who cleans your office? Could you take some time and
get to know them? Could you make them feel special in some way?
Send
a Card
Consider sending a
card or celebrating with the following people in some way this week:
- November 26th - Cheryl Dance - Birthday
- November 30th - Kal Knickerbocker - Birthday
Good
Stuff
An
oldie but goodie... I've heard this joke a bunch of times, but it
always makes me smirk:
A lady was picking
through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one
big enough for her family. She asked the stock boy, 'Do these turkeys
get any bigger?'
The stock boy answered, 'No ma' am, they're dead.'
