From the Pastor
![]() Hello from University Lutheran…. Well, I give up. Actually, I gave up some time ago. This weekend marks the beginning of Advent…the season of the Church when we prepare for the miracle of Christmas. For years I have been grumbling about how our culture has taken the Season of Advent away from us and rushed us into Christmas beginning … when is it… Halloween now? You have to understand, I come from an old Germanic tradition that says you don’t even put up a tree until Christmas Eve!… And you leave it up until Epiphany (January 6) a time period that is the actual Christmas season. But then I figure, “Why fight it?” “Why not make the best of early Christmas and work it in as a partner to Advent?” So, that’s where I am now. And I feel so much better…not in compromising Liturgical principle, but in expanding the opportunity to work both the themes of Advent and Christmas in at the same time. Ok… so I just block out all the displays and decorations that feature carolers, snow persons, Santa and his helpers, you get the idea. I have even been known to exit the mall by a side entrance just so I don’t have to run smack into Santa! The lights are what really convinced me. I just enjoy heading home from the office or out for an evening errand and seeing the growing number of twinkling lights that modify the darkness. That’s exactly what we are doing as we light the Advent wreath on Sundays during the Four Weeks of Advent… that the light of the coming Christ is more than just a way of surviving the Winter Solstice. It is a proclamation that the Light of the World is coming to us again so that our lives need not give way to the darkness… the light that shows us the way out of our personal and national crises… and the light that keeps us from getting lost in the darkness… and the light that helps us find those important parts of our lives that we have lost… dropped and rolled under the bed. So I am off to Wal-Mart to buy some new lights… it’s so much easier to buy new lights each year than to figure out why half the old ones don’t work! I will trim my outdoor ADVENT trees and do my neighborhood best to cheer up the darkness. Last year I was the only one on the block with out-door lights! I’ve come a long way, baby. Have a Happy Advent!Pastor D. UUU Tis The Season Advent Calendars are available for everyone. Just contact Crystal, Randee and Danielle at peerministers@universitylutheranchurch.org UUU From the President Dear members, families, friends of University Lutheran Church,
I trust everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving week-end. It is so nice to see that the students are back with us. On December 3d, the church council will meet. I encourage all council members to please come. We hope that it will be a short meeting right after the service. Here at University Lutheran our Advent Season will be compacted somewhat, because when the semester at FSU ends most of our students will be gone, and Wednesday evening activities pretty much come to a stand still, so we will have only one Advent service on the 6th of December. A simple meal will be served that evening along with the Evening Advent Vespers. I encourage all resident members to come, if possible. More details will follow soon. Please remember to keep the families of Deb Buenrostro and Cheryl Dance in your prayers. Both of their fathers are in need of special prayers and care. If you are in town this coming Sunday, please join us for service at 11 a.m. Evening Meal at HOPE Community The Second Thursday of the month is almost here again. That means ULC will be serving the evening meal at the HOPE Community. December 14th our YOUTH members will be serving the meal. We also pledged to donate $50 to the HOPE Community towards the meal expense each time we serve. Donations welcome. January will be members from the Church Council serving the meal. Remember though, any time YOU want to volunteer to help serve, you do not have to be a member of the designated group, just let Catherine Knickerbocker know you want to help serve.
UUU 2006 Tailgate Season a Great Success A big thank you to all those who helped with the Tail Gates this fall. Those people include David and Lizbeth Childs, Michael and Rebecca Strickland, Cheryl & Donnie Dance, Mary Hafner, Betty Knickerbocker, Linda Andrews, Elsa & Meredith McKinney, Adam Brink, Connie Brink, Art & Michelle Kraft, Debra Mattingly, Mr. & Mrs. Keith Lukat, Paul & Myrna Hoover, Leah & Dave Paul, Ann Marie Karl, and Catherine & Kal Knickerbocker. Everyone helped make it enjoyable and successful. Thank you everyone. UUU Thrivent Build Habitat Home Dedicated
A special thanks to Rosemary Ferguson who organized the two lunches ULC women provided for the Habitat building group. She did a terrific job. The lunches received rave reviews. The Habitat House recently completed through the cooperation of Tallahassee’s Lutheran Churches…with grant assistance from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans… and dedicated Sunday afternoon, November 19th, would not have been such a pleasant experience without the great meals provided by volunteers. UUU Alternative Christmas Market This is a great place to find that "special" holiday gift to replace the usual socks and shirts. Visitors will have the opportunity to make a donation, on behalf of those on our holiday shopping list, to over 30 charities and receive a gift card to send them announcing your gift that keeps on giving. This is the 20th anniversary of the largest showcase of local charities and third world fair trade crafts in the area at John Wesley Church. Saturday 12/2 - 9 am to 4 pm & Sunday 12/3- 1 pm to 4 pm
