From Pastor Jay
Have you heard of
"Second Life"? No, I'm not talking about "after life."
That's something we look forward to in the future, "Second Life" is
actually something that you can experience now. It's a web based
application that allows you to live a "Second Life". When you
sign up, you get to choose what you look like and a few other necessary
details about yourself, and then you walk around interacting with other
people who are doing the exact same thing that you are.
The creator of Second Life, a man named Philip Rosedale, actually
thinks that there is more to Second Life than just a neat video game
that mimics human interaction. He thinks it is the next wave of
international communication.
The greatest development in international communication, Rosedale
points out, within the past 10 years has been the world wide web, which
is largely driven by text. Text, unfortunately, is only
understood by people that speak the same language. Images and
videos and new "virtual kinesthetics" however, can be understood over a
broader audience. Rosedale's "Second Life" is actually an
experiment of how a broad audience that speaks different languages can
communicate, interact, and then possibly find a reason and method to
learn the language of the other person.
As we remember during this Advent season, what it was like for Christ
to come into our world, being born as a little baby perhaps it might be
good of us to think of Second Life. In Jesus' life coming to us
meant risking coming into a world that probably looked so flat and
one-dimensional. The technology was probably so outdated compared
to what He knew of at the Father's throne. And yet, He came to
us, learned our language, communicated with us, interacted with us, and
loved us.
He loved us so much that He gave up His Life for us on the cross.
He came into our world, tainted by sin and our failures so that He
could die and offer us life that would be more than what we could ever
imagine or mimic. That "second life" is eternity. That
"second life" is more real than this one. It isn't the mimic of
anything, it's pure and authentic. That "second life" is yours
because of Jesus' coming into our world.
In
Christ,
Pastor Jay

This Week's
"Pastor's Challenge"
The text of this week's sermon can be found at jWinters.com.
Every week, I try to live out my sermon in my life in some way.
(I hear it's good to try to practice what you preach.)
This week's sermon was entitled, "When was the last time someone told
you that you were handsome or beautiful?" Who could you find this
week who might need to hear that from you? Could you use that as
a way to tell them how Jesus feels about them?
Send

Good
Stuff
Several students have
been studying at University Lutheran for finals week. Here are
some of the final exam questions they're studying for:
History: Describe the history of the
Western world from its origins to the present day, concentrating
especially, but not exclusively, on its social, political, economic,
religious, and philosophical impact on Europe, Asia, America, and
Africa. Be brief, concise, and specific.
Medicine: You have been provided with a
razor blade, a piece of gauze and a bottle of scotch. Remove your
appendix. Do not suture until your work has been inspected. You
have fifteen minutes.
Public Relations: 2500 riot-crazed aborigines are
storming the classroom. Calm them. You may use any ancient language
except Latin or Greek.
Music: Write a piano concerto.
Orchestrate and perform it with a flute and drum. You will find a drum
under your seat.
Political Science: There is a red telephone on the
desk beside you. Start World War III. Report at length on its
socio-political effects, if any.
