Prayer List
(Please consider including the following in your prayer life this week)

Thanksgiving for all the gifts we have recieved.

God's healing and comforting hand be with Gil Washington, friend of Julia L.  Gil experienced a brain aneurism.

Thanksgiving for family and friends.

For the presence of quiet time for reflection after this busy Christmas season.

That God may lead us to decide on New Years resolutions that will improve our health and the health of our realtionships with others.

That we may receive the fullness of life as we celebrate the fullness of Christ's life amongst us.

...and that our prayers may be joined with the prayers of all God's saints here on earth.

From Pastor Jay

Please watch this video, The Life of Mary: Unfulfilled/Fulfilled.

Christmas presents are unwrapped.  Trees are getting hauled out of houses.  I'm assuming that big stores are already prepping their Valentine's Day stock, and hoping they'll get rid of anything Christmas-like by New Years Eve.

Time moves on and so do we.  Christmas may have brought us some great gifts and some glorious time with family.  It may have even brought us a chance or two to share our faith.  But now, we're packing our loot away and wondering what we'll decorate our house with next.

Many people regard this time of year to be one of the most depressing periods that they experience annually.  There is something about not seeing the glimmer of Christmas lights anymore.  It can be tough to put a sudden halt on all of this joy and peace.  It seems to be a slap in the face to all of the Christmas carols we've been singing.  In some ways, it's sort of like our own very different version of post-pardem depression.

In studies done on post-pardem depression, one of the signals that a mother may be heading out of the tunnel of darkness is the recognition that the child's life is moving forward.  There is a similar recognition in the Christian life.  It is the recognition that Christ is moving forward, ahead of us.  It is the recognition that this new Life is not about us, but is about the Life itself moving forward.

That Life is Jesus.  That Life has been moving forward ever since that Christmas Day and even before it.  That Life died on a cross, so that you may be "birthed again" in the waters of Baptism.  That Life is His, and that Life has been given to you - it is yours.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Church Year Information

I always found the Church year to be something interesting when I got to the seminary.  Here's a few things to keep an eye out for:
  • This current season is the season of Christmas.  Its colors are gold and white because it is a "Christ festival" celebrating something specific about Christ's life.
  • New Year's Eve and Day have been celebrated by the church for a long long time because they normally fall around 8 days after Christmas.  The Jewish custom at the time of Jesus would be to circumcise and name a child on the eighth day.
  • The season we will be going into is Epiphany.  Epiphany's color is officially green, but there are two major festivals (Baptism of Our Lord and the Transfiguration) in Epiphany that are white/gold.  Often people will say that Epiphany's color's' are "green, gold, and white."
  • Epiphany starts the Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans.

New Poll Question!

The New Year is coming up!  What will your resolution be?

Click here to go to this week's poll question!

Further help with resolutions available.  i.e.
1. Reading a devotional book - Many books available for recommendation and/or loan.
2. Help with a service project - We can help you find one (including reading and altar preparations at church) or we can work together to start one.
3. Invest financially in God's work - We can find a need within the congregation that you can consider your own and give to.
4. Read one book of the Bible each month - It's tougher than it sounds, get a partner who will keep you on track.
5. Attend a Bible study - 10am on Sunday, 6:30pm on Wednesday, 5:30pm on Thursday or a whole slew of other possible times if you want to start something new.
6. Invite one person to church each month - This isn't as hard as Satan makes you believe it is.  We have tools you can use in this process if you want to do it.

We can even work on other resolutions not listed here!!!  Such amazing opportunities await you!

  • Betty Knickerbocker - January 11 - Birthday
  • Karyl Louwenaar - January 11 - Birthday

Good Stuff

Before you make that New Year's resolution, consider this quote:

"The reason of a resolution is to be more considered than the resolution itself."
