From Pastor Jay

Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?  Should old acquaintance be forgot, and days of auld lang syne?  Robert Burns' classic poem turned traditional New Years Eve song will be played or sung just about anyplace that you are tonight when our calendars change from 2008 to 2009.

The poem is one of thinking to the past year and the events that have led up to today, December 31st, 2008.  After tonight, you'll never have another 2008.  You'll look back on 2008 with fond memories and maybe a few winces as you think of the bad things that have happened this year.

Some of us would probably be happy forgetting the "old acquaintance" of sin's effects in our lives.  We've made some bone-headed decisions and have been through our share of pain. Still some of the "acquaintance" of our time hasn't been so bad.  Some of it even is to be celebrated and enjoyed.

Robert Burns' poem realizes that this life of ours is one that is sometimes filled with tragedy and sometimes filled with glory, but the important thing in Burns' poem isn't the details of our lives, but rather who we spend our life with.  It's a song about friendship and companionship.

By the end of the poem, Burns and his friends are taking "a goodwill draught", a swig of the pint that they've bought earlier in the poem.

Tonight we will be celebrating the arrival of a New Year and we'll be looking back at our year past.  We will be celebrating communion, which tonight may take on a bit of the notion of "a goodwill draught" from the One who forgives us our sins and celebrates with us in His glory.

We hope you can make it for auld lang syne.

In Christ,
Pastor Jay

Join us tonight for New Year's Eve
One of the things that I love about New Years is getting to make resolutions.  These little goals that I make up don't always last throughout the year, but traces of them always remain with me for the whole year.

Over the year I've noticed that when I worship on New Year's Eve, those resolutions seem to take on more meaning for me.  Please consider worshiping with us tonight and see if the same happens for you.

Spring Break in New Orleans! - "Out of the Ashes"
Spring Break may seem like it's far away, but it's just around the corner.  This Spring Break (March 8-14) we will be leaving Tallahassee and working at Camp Restore in New Orleans, LA.  The theme for this service retreat will be "Out of the Ashes" as we will be considering how our lives come out of the ashes of Ash Wednesday, and focusing on helping New Orleans come out of the ashes of disaster.  For more information visit our facebook event or contact Pastor Jay.

Strategic Leadership Team - Your Books Are STILL In
The Strategic Leadership Team is not meeting in December, but you have a reading assignment, "Simple Church" by Thom S. Rainer and Eric Geiger.  The books have come in.  Stop by PJ's office and pick yours up.  These must be read by January 25th.

This Week's "Pastor's Challenge"
This week's sermon is available at jWinters.com.  In it, the idea of having a meaning in your life that coincides with God is addressed.  As you're looking at that list of New Years resolutions, will you search God's Word and find a resolution that might bring Him glory?
